Chapter 2 - Shadows of a Stolen Empire

Charlotte lay on the cold pavement outside the Solmere Hotel, staring up at the towering glass skyscraper. Her skyscraper. The rain began to fall, washing the blood from her bruised lip. She didn’t cry. She had run out of tears the day she buried her mother.

Three months ago, Eleanor Vale was the Queen of the hospitality industry. She was fierce, brilliant, and deeply loving to her only daughter, Charlotte. But Eleanor had made one fatal mistake: she trusted Arthur Sterling. Arthur was the Chief Operating Officer. He was like an uncle to Charlotte. He ate dinner at their house. He bought her birthday gifts.

Then, the "accident" happened. Eleanor’s private car plunged off a cliff on the Pacific Coast Highway. The police called it a tragic failure of the brake system. Charlotte had believed it, until she found her mother’s hidden diary in a secret safe behind a painting in their mansion. The final entry was written in frantic, shaky handwriting. “Arthur is stealing from the company accounts. Millions are missing. If anything happens to me, Charlotte, run. Do not trust him. Find the original will at the central bank.”

The next day, Charlotte’s credit cards were frozen. Her bank accounts were drained to zero. Armed men had shown up at her apartment, forcing her to flee into the night with nothing but the clothes on her back. Arthur had declared her legally incompetent, a grieving daughter who had lost her mind and run away. He installed himself as the interim CEO of the Solmere Empire. And he crowned his spoiled, vicious daughter, Victoria, as the new princess of the city.

For ninety days, Charlotte lived in the shadows. She slept in cheap motels. She ate leftover food. She dyed her bright blonde hair to a dull, mousy brown. She forged a fake identity and applied for a job as a cleaning maid in her own hotel. She needed access to Arthur’s executive office on the 50th floor to download the financial records that proved his embezzlement.

Today, she had finally done it. She had the encrypted USB drive hidden safely inside her shoe. But as she was leaving, Victoria had spotted her in the private elevator lobby. Victoria, always looking for someone to bully, had accused Charlotte of stealing a diamond ring. That led to the beating. The dragging. The public humiliation.

Charlotte slowly stood up from the wet pavement. She felt the small, hard shape of the USB drive pressing against her heel. She had the evidence. Now, she just needed the power to execute her revenge. She pulled her phone from her pocket and dialed a number she hadn’t called in years. “Julian,” she whispered into the receiver. “I need your help. I’m ready to take my empire back.”
