Chapter 5 - The Gala of Lies

The grand ballroom of the Solmere Hotel was a breathtaking sea of wealth and extravagance. Hundreds of reporters, billionaires, and politicians mingled under the massive crystal chandeliers. At exactly 9:00 PM, the orchestra stopped playing. The lights dimmed, and a single spotlight hit the main stage.

Arthur Sterling stepped up to the microphone, looking the picture of a distinguished, mourning gentleman. He adjusted his tie and put on his best fake, sorrowful expression. “Ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur began, his voice echoing through the massive room. “We are gathered here tonight to honor the legacy of my dear friend, Eleanor Vale.” He paused to wipe a nonexistent tear from his eye. “Since her tragic passing, and the… unfortunate mental decline of her sweet daughter, Charlotte, the burden of this great empire has fallen on my shoulders.”

In the front row, Victoria smiled proudly, already posing for the cameras. “Tonight,” Arthur continued, raising a gold-plated pen. “I will be signing the legal documents to officially absorb the remaining Vale shares into the Sterling Trust. I promise to lead this company with honor, integrity, and—”

Bang. The massive, heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom were suddenly thrown wide open. The sound echoed like a gunshot, cutting Arthur off mid-sentence. Every single head in the room snapped toward the entrance. The cameras spun around. The reporters gasped.

Standing in the doorway, illuminated by the flashing bulbs of a hundred cameras, was Charlotte Vale. She looked like a goddess of vengeance. The midnight blue gown flowed around her as she took her first step into the room. Julian Vance walked calmly by her side, radiating absolute, terrifying authority.

A wave of shocked whispers swept through the crowd. “Is that…?” “It can’t be. They said she was locked in a psychiatric ward in Switzerland!” “She looks incredible!” On the stage, Arthur Sterling’s face turned the color of dead ash. The gold pen slipped from his trembling fingers and clattered onto the podium.

Victoria stood up from her front-row seat, her eyes wide with disbelief. She recognized the face. It was the face of the billionaire heiress everyone thought was gone. But more horrifyingly… it was the exact same face of the poor, helpless maid she had beaten and dragged across the lobby floor just 24 hours ago.
