Chapter 10 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE FOSTER EMPIRE

The chaos inside the grand ballroom was instantaneous and absolute. Flashbulbs strobed like lightning bolts, reporters shouted competing questions across the room, and local investors scrambled toward the exits as if a bomb had gone off.
Julian thrashed against the federal agents, his designer tuxedo twisting awkwardly as they guided him toward the side service corridor. “This is a mistake! You can’t do this! My lawyers will strip your badges by morning!” he roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
Evelyn collapsed into a velvet armchair, sobbing hysterically into her silk handkerchief as her social standing evaporated in a matter of seconds. Not a single wealthy guest or business associate stepped forward to comfort her; in high society, a sinking ship is avoided at all costs.
I stood beside Arthur, watching the wreckage of the man who had tried to destroy my life with cold, calculated indifference. I felt no pity. Only a profound, liberating peace.
“Mrs. Foster?”
I turned around to see a second federal investigator standing beside Dr. Sterling, holding a digital tablet.
“Yes?” I answered clearly.
“We have secured Dr. Vance’s complete cooperation,” the investigator said, lowering his voice respectfully. “He handed over the unredacted financial ledgers and the original medical records regarding your manipulated files. Furthermore, our forensic audit confirms that Julian transferred the majority of his liquid assets into offshore accounts registered under shell corporations to avoid tax liabilities. Because you were the primary bookkeeper who originally handled those accounts, your sworn testimony will be vital in recovering those stolen funds.”
“I’ll give you everything you need,” I said, looking down at my flat stomach, knowing that the empire Julian had built on lies was finally paying its true debt. “Every invoice, every forged signature, every wire transfer.”
Arthur placed a warm, reassuring hand on my shoulder. “Come on, Sloan. Let’s get you out of this circus. The real work starts tomorrow, but tonight, you can finally sleep without a shadow hanging over your head.”
We walked out through the private back exit of the hotel, leaving the flashing lights, the screaming reporters, and the shattered remnants of the Foster family far behind us.
Back at the quiet cottage, the night air was cool and smelled of damp earth and pine trees. Arthur poured two cups of hot chamomile tea as we sat in the living room, listening to the quiet ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.
“You did it, Sloan,” Arthur said softly, raising his teacup in a silent toast. “You walked through the fire and came out the other side.”
May you like
“I couldn't have done it without you, Arthur,” I replied, my voice thick with emotion. “You gave me a room when I had nowhere to go. You gave me the truth when everyone else was lying. Why?”
Arthur smiled gently, looking up at the faded military portrait hanging above the mantelpiece. “Because during the war, I lost people I loved because good men stayed silent in the face of cruelty. I promised myself long ago that if I ever saw a truly good person being crushed by a monster, I wouldn't look away.”
