Chapter 9 - THE CRACK IN THE FAÇADE

The moment Julian’s eyes locked onto me walking across the polished marble floor of the grand ballroom, his glass of scotch slipped from his fingers. It shattered against the tile with a sharp, explosive crack, spilling amber liquid across the white marble and instantly silencing the small group of investors standing around him.
Evelyn spun around, her jaw dropping so fast she looked like she had seen a ghost. “Sloan?” she gasped, her voice cutting through the sudden lull in conversation like a knife.
Julian marched across the room toward us, his face flushed a mottled, furious red, his eyes bulging with disbelief and raw panic. He didn't care about the mayor, the press, or the hundred wealthy patrons watching his every move.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Julian hissed, grabbing my arm with a hard, aggressive grip. “How did you get an invitation? You’re bankrupt! You’re a pariah!”
Before I could even open my mouth, Arthur stepped forward, placing his heavy wooden cane firmly across Julian’s wrist. The veterans’ grip was deceptively powerful; Julian winced and instantly jerked his hand back, glaring at the older man with naked hatred.
“Keep your hands to yourself, boy,” Arthur said, his voice flat, cold, and carrying the absolute authority of a commanding officer addressing an insubordinate recruit. “Unless you want a federal assault charge added to your growing list of indictments before the night is even over.”
“This is a private event!” Julian snarled, his voice rising in pitch as nearby reporters began turning their heads toward the commotion. “This woman is a fraud! She has no business being in this room!”
“On the contrary, Julian,” a calm, resonant voice echoed through the crowd.
Dr. Sterling stepped out from the shadow of a towering marble pillar, wearing a pristine tuxedo and carrying a thick manila folder under his arm. Behind him, two men in dark suits and federal windbreakers flashed official badges to the hotel security guards stationed at the doors.
The room went dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the marble floor.
“Dr. Sterling?” Julian stammered, his eyes darting frantically from the federal agents to the renowned medical specialist. “What is the meaning of this? Why are federal marshals in this building?”
“We’re here on a federal warrant, Mr. Foster,” the lead agent said smoothly, stepping past Julian and holding up an official document bearing a federal judge’s signature. “You are being placed under formal investigation for corporate fraud, interstate wire fraud, conspiracy, and medical tampering.”
The flashbulbs erupted in a blinding wall of white light. Reporters surged forward, thrusting microphones and cameras into Julian’s face as the reality of the situation crashed down upon him like a tidal wave.

“This is insane!” Julian shouted, backing away as the federal agents moved in, placing cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. “It’s a setup! Sloan planted fake documents! She’s crazy!”
Evelyn screamed, clutching her diamond necklace as her son was physically restrained and turned toward the exit doors in front of the city’s entire elite social circle.
