Chapter 6 - THE ALLIANCE WITH DR. VANCE

The audio file played on a loop in my mind as the sun dipped entirely below the horizon, painting the sky in bruises of purple and gray. Arthur stood up, brushing the cedar shavings from his flannel shirt, his face unreadable in the twilight.

“Vance is running scared,” Arthur observed, leaning heavily on his cane. “When a man like that panics, he doesn't try to protect his co-conspirators. He tries to save his own medical license.”

“He wants a payout,” I said, staring at the glowing screen of the burner phone. “Or he wants immunity. Either way, he’s offering us the missing link we need to bring down Julian's entire corporate structure in one fell swoop.”

“Don't meet him alone,” Arthur warned instantly. “Vance is slippery, and Julian is desperate. If Julian finds out Vance is trying to cut a deal with you, things could get violent very quickly.”

“I won't be alone,” I said, a cold, calculated plan forming in my mind. “We bring Dr. Sterling into this. Sterling has professional leverage over the regional medical board. If Vance tries to play double agent, Sterling can strip him of his credentials before midnight.”

By 9:00 PM, we were sitting in Dr. Sterling’s private consultation room downtown. The blinds were drawn tight, and a single desk lamp cast a warm, golden glow over the mahogany table. Dr. Vance sat across from us, sweating profusely through his expensive silk tie, his hands trembling as he clutched a glass of ice water.

“You don't understand, Sloan,” Vance stammered, his eyes darting frantically between me, Arthur, and Dr. Sterling. “Julian threatened me! He said if I didn't falsify your medical charts to show permanent infertility, he would expose my illegal prescription-padding ring to the state board!”

“So you traded my life and my future to save your own skin?” I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

“I had no choice!” Vance pleaded, leaning forward across the table. “Julian is connected to powerful real estate syndicates in the capital. They would have ruined me!”

Dr. Sterling leaned back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest with a look of absolute disgust. “You took an oath, Vance. You swore to do no harm. Instead, you acted as a hired gun for a petty corporate crook.”

“I can give you everything!” Vance blurted out, sliding a heavy leather-bound ledger across the table. “Every financial transfer Julian made to my private accounts! Every forged lab report! The original blood panels showing Sloan’s absolute, perfect health! It’s all in here!”

I picked up the ledger, flipping through the pages filled with neat columns of numbers, dates, and Julian’s signature scrawled in black ink. The smoking gun. The undeniable physical proof of a multi-year conspiracy designed to drive me insane and push me out of my home with empty hands.

“This is more than enough,” Dr. Sterling said, tapping the ledger with a single finger. “With this document and the digital backups Arthur’s contact secured, Julian’s construction empire won't survive the week.”

“What about my immunity?” Vance whispered, looking at Sterling with desperate, pleading eyes. “The federal investigators... if I cooperate fully as a key witness, can I avoid prison time?”

May you like

“That,” Arthur said from the corner of the room, stepping forward into the light for the first time, “is something you’ll have to discuss with the prosecutor. But if you hold back a single detail, I personally ensure you spend the rest of your natural life behind bars.”

Vance swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. “I’ll tell them everything. Every last detail.”
