Chapter 15 - EPILOGUE: THE HOUSE ON THE HILL

Five years passed in the blink of an eye.
The small cottage next door to Arthur had been officially purchased and combined with his property, creating a sprawling, beautiful home surrounded by a blooming garden, fruit trees, and a wooden swing set where two energetic five-year-olds laughed and chased each other through the afternoon grass.
Arthur, now well into his late sixties, spent his days teaching little Arthur how to carve wooden ducks on the back porch, while little Clara sat on my lap as I reviewed legal briefs for the Sloan Foster Foundation.
The foundation had grown into a statewide institution, helping hundreds of women escape toxic marriages, fraudulent financial control, and medical manipulation. Every success story was a testament to the fact that truth, no matter how deeply buried, will always find a way to the surface.
As for Julian, his appeals had been systematically denied by the federal appellate court, and he remained locked behind gray concrete walls, a forgotten footnote in the history of the city’s real estate scandals. Evelyn lived quietly in obscurity, a cautionary tale of what happens when pride and cruelty replace basic human empathy.
One late autumn evening, as the sun dipped below the tree line and painted the valley in hues of gold and amber, I stood on the back porch with a warm mug of tea, watching my children play in the yard.
Arthur walked up beside me, leaning slightly on his cane, though his posture remained as straight and steady as the day I met him.
“Penny for your thoughts, Sloan?” he asked softly.
I smiled, leaning my head gently against his shoulder. “I was just thinking about the night Julian threw my suitcase into the rain.”

Arthur chuckled, taking a slow sip of his black coffee. “Turned out to be the best rainy night of your life, didn't it?”
“The absolute best,” I agreed, watching my children chase a firefly across the darkening grass, knowing that no matter what storms lay ahead, our foundation was built on solid, unbreakable truth.
