Chapter 8 - THE INVITATION TO THE GALA

Word of Julian’s municipal waterfront construction bid winning final approval hit the local newspapers on a crisp autumn Saturday. The City Chronicle ran a glowing front-page feature celebrating Julian Foster as the region’s premier young real estate visionary, complete with a large photograph of Julian standing proudly in front of an architectural rendering of the planned luxury pier.

That evening, a special courier delivered a heavy, gold-embossed envelope to Arthur’s cottage. Inside was a VIP invitation addressed formally to Mr. Arthur Reed and Guest for the annual Greater Metropolitan Charity Gala—a high-society event hosted by the city’s elite, sponsored in large part by Foster Commercial Construction.

“Julian is hosting a major fundraising dinner to celebrate the waterfront contract,” I noted, reading the invitation aloud as I sat at the kitchen counter. “Evelyn is chairing the gala committee. Every prominent businessman, politician, and investor in the state will be in attendance.”

“And he invited me?” Arthur raised an eyebrow, pouring himself a cup of tea.

“He probably invited you as a courtesy because you’re his quiet neighbor,” I smiled thinly. “Or more likely, his ego has grown so large since winning the municipal contract that he wants to flaunt his success to the entire neighborhood, including the 'neighborhood ghost.'”

Arthur chuckled, a deep, rumbling sound. “An ego like Julian’s is a fatal flaw. It blinds a man to incoming artillery fire until the shell is already landing in his backyard.”

“Do you want to go?” I asked, looking down at my slightly rounded stomach. I was now entering my second trimester, and Dr. Sterling had cleared me for light social events as long as I avoided stress.

“Oh, we’re going, Sloan,” Arthur said, his blue eyes flashing with quiet resolve. “A grand opening gala is the exact right venue for a grand closing performance. It’s time to let the federal investigators do their work under the flashbulbs of the local press.”

Over the next few days, we prepared for the event with meticulous precision. Arthur pulled a classic, impeccably tailored midnight-blue tuxedo from his closet—a garment that had clearly seen state dinners and high-ranking military galas decades ago. For myself, I selected a stunning, floor-length emerald-green silk gown that draped gracefully over my changing silhouette, accentuating both my elegance and the unmistakable, beautiful curve of early motherhood.

Dr. Sterling arranged for a private medical escort to remain on standby just outside the grand hotel ballroom, ensuring that both my health and the twins' development were never compromised. Every detail was locked down.

On the night of the gala, the grand ballroom of the Grand Regent Hotel glittered with crystal chandeliers, expensive champagne flutes, and the rustling of designer silk. Flashbulbs popped continuously as local politicians and wealthy investors mingled beneath soaring vaulted ceilings.

Julian stood near the center stage, wearing a bespoke Italian tuxedo, holding a glass of vintage scotch while laughing heartily at a joke told by the city’s mayor. Evelyn stood proudly beside him, draped in diamonds, playing the gracious matriarch of the evening.

Then, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom slowly swung open. A quiet ripple of whispers swept through the crowd as Arthur Reed—the reclusive veteran who never left his cottage—stepped into the light, leaning slightly on his cane.

And right beside him, walking with absolute poise, unyielding confidence, and a radiant, undeniable glow, was me.
