Chapter 2 - Whispers in the West Wing

The gala commenced with the precision of a military campaign. Three hundred of the most affluent individuals in the Northeast milled about the grand ballroom, their laughter mingling with the clinking of champagne flutes and the swelling melodies of the string quartet. Maya moved through the crowd like a phantom, balancing a tray of hors d'oeuvres, her eyes scanning the room for empty glasses and discarded napkins.

Vanessa Sinclair was holding court near the grand ice sculpture, her diamond engagement ring catching the light with every dramatic wave of her hand. She wore a crimson gown that practically demanded attention, her smile bright and perfectly rehearsed as she accepted congratulations from senators and tech magnates alike. Beside her stood Julian Cross, Adrien’s best friend and the Chief Operating Officer of Whitmore Holdings. Julian was handsome in a sharp, calculating way, his charisma as lethal as a snake's bite. Maya had always felt an icy chill whenever he entered a room.

"They make a stunning couple, don't they?" a wealthy socialite whispered to her companion as Maya passed by. "Though I hear the merger is the real romance. Sinclair Development and Whitmore Holdings... they'll own half the Eastern Seaboard."

Maya ignored the chatter, slipping through the double doors into the quiet of the West Wing to retrieve another tray of champagne. The West Wing was off-limits to guests, a labyrinth of private offices and studies. The thick carpet absorbed the sound of her sensible shoes as she approached the service pantry.

As she neared Adrien's private study, she noticed the heavy mahogany door was slightly ajar. A sliver of light spilled into the darkened hallway, accompanied by the low, urgent murmur of voices. Maya hesitated. Her training dictated she walk away, mind her own business, and focus on the task at hand. But the voices belonged to Vanessa and Julian, and their tone was anything but celebratory.

"He's going to sign the addendum right before the toast," Julian was saying, his voice laced with venom. "Once his signature is on that paper, the voting rights transfer automatically upon the marriage. His father will be powerless."

Maya stopped breathing. She pressed her back against the cool wall, her tray held rigidly against her chest.

"Are you sure the offshore accounts are untraceable?" Vanessa’s voice, usually dripping with honey, was sharp and cold. "Adrien's auditors are thorough."

"They won't look where they don't know to look," Julian scoffed softly. "We've been siphoning the development funds for eighteen months, V. By the time Adrien realizes the company is bleeding out, Sinclair International will acquire the remaining assets for pennies on the dollar. He thinks this marriage is saving his legacy. He has no idea he's signing his own execution order."

There was a soft rustle of fabric, followed by the sound of lips meeting. Maya’s eyes widened in horror.

"Just play the loving fiancée for a few more weeks," Julian murmured. "Once the merger is locked, we'll ruin him. He'll be begging us to buy him out. And you’ll get the ring, the money, and me."

"I can't wait to see the look on his arrogant face," Vanessa laughed, a cruel, hollow sound. "Now, I need to get back out there. My dear, sweet Adrien is waiting to give me his empire."

Maya heard the click of Vanessa’s heels moving toward the door. Panic seized her. She turned and sprinted silently back down the corridor, ducking into the service pantry just seconds before the study door opened fully. Her hands were trembling so violently she had to set the silver tray down on the marble counter to keep it from rattling.

She had to warn Adrien. But how? She was a maid. Vanessa was a billionaire heiress, and Julian was his best friend of six years. If she marched into that ballroom and accused them of embezzlement and conspiracy, she would be fired, sued, and possibly thrown in jail. They would destroy her. And if she lost this job, her mother would lose her medical care. Claire would die.

Maya squeezed her eyes shut, a tear escaping down her cheek. Noticing was her job. She had noticed the missing files on Julian's desk weeks ago. She had noticed the secret glances between Julian and Vanessa. She had the puzzle pieces, but no proof.

Suddenly, her radio earpiece crackled. It was Elena. "Maya. Report to the grand staircase. Mr. Whitmore is about to make the announcement and sign the merger ceremonial documents. We need staff on standby for the champagne cascade."

Maya opened her eyes. She looked at her reflection in the polished silver tray. She saw a tired, frightened woman who had spent years hiding in the background. But she also saw the girl who had defended a terrified boy at St. Jude's. She couldn't let Adrien walk into a slaughter.
