Chapter 5 - The Fallout and The Flash Drive

The private study was deathly quiet compared to the war zone in the ballroom. Maya sat on the edge of a leather chesterfield sofa, staring at her trembling hands. Outside the heavy oak doors, she could hear the muffled shouts of Adrien’s father, the hysterical weeping of Vanessa, and the authoritative bark of security clearing the estate.

Her phone vibrated in her apron pocket. She pulled it out, her heart skipping a beat. It was a text from Elena: What have you done? The press is everywhere. Are you safe? Maya replied: I'm safe. I'm sorry, Elena.

The door burst open. Adrien walked in, his tuxedo jacket gone, his bow tie undone, looking like a man who had just walked through a hurricane and survived. He locked the door behind him and turned to face her.

For a long moment, neither spoke. The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

"Do you have any idea what is happening out there?" Adrien finally asked, his voice deceptively calm. "Stock futures for Whitmore Holdings are already plummeting. My father is threatening to have me committed. The Sinclair family is drafting a lawsuit for breach of contract and public defamation."

"I'm sorry," Maya whispered, looking down at her scuffed shoes. "I had no other choice. If you had signed that paper, you would have lost everything."

Adrien walked over to his massive mahogany desk and opened his hand. The silver flash drive clattered onto the polished wood. "You slipped this into my hand. It belongs to Julian."

"Yes." Maya looked up, her eyes blazing with sudden fierce determination. "I heard them, Adrien. In the West Wing, just before the announcement. Vanessa and Julian. They've been embezzling development funds for eighteen months. The marriage contract was a trap. It contained a hidden clause that would transfer your voting rights to Vanessa, allowing Julian to launch a hostile takeover and bankrupt your father's company."

Adrien stared at her, his jaw tightening. He didn't look surprised; he looked violently angry. "I've suspected a leak in our financials for a year," he muttered, pacing the floor. "I hired three private investigators, but they found nothing. Julian was the one running the audits. He was covering his own tracks."

"He said the proof was on his encrypted drive. The offshore accounts. Everything." Maya stood up. "I couldn't just yell it out. Julian would have played the victim, and without proof, they would have rushed the signing anyway. I needed a distraction. I needed to blow up the event so completely that the signing became impossible."

"So you kissed me." A ghost of a smirk played on his lips, though his eyes remained dark. "You engineered a high-society scandal to steal my best friend's keychain."

"It was the most efficient method," Maya said defensively, her cheeks burning as she remembered the feel of his lips against hers. "It was less than three seconds."

"It was two point eight seconds," Adrien corrected softly, stepping closer to her. "And it cost me a billion dollars."

"It saved you ten billion," she shot back.

Adrien stopped inches from her. He reached out, gently lifting her chin so she was forced to look into his eyes. "You saved me again, Maya. Just like you did when we were kids. You took the fall so I wouldn't have to."

"You remember."

"I never forgot," Adrien said softly. "When my mother died, my father went to pieces. He sent me away to that awful place while he 'sorted things out.' I was a rich kid in a shark tank. They were going to beat me half to death. You stepped in with a broken piece of fencing and fought them off. You bled for me. When my father finally brought me home, I tried to find you. But you had been moved to another system."

"It was a long time ago," Maya deflected, uncomfortable with the intense emotion in his gaze. "We need to focus on this drive. If Julian realizes it's missing, he'll wipe the servers remotely."

Adrien’s demeanor shifted instantly back to the ruthless CEO. He grabbed his laptop, plugged the drive in, and cracked his knuckles. "Let's see what my former best friend has been hiding. It's time to go to war."
