Chapter 7 - The Race Against Time

Adrien didn't hesitate. He bypassed his security detail, threw Maya into the passenger seat of his private Aston Martin, and tore down the long driveway of the estate. The sun was just beginning to rise over the Connecticut hills, casting a pale, bloody light over the world.

"Breathe, Maya," Adrien commanded, keeping one hand on the steering wheel while his other hand gripped hers tightly. "We're going to get her the best doctors in the country. I'll fly a specialist in from Johns Hopkins. I'll buy the damn hospital if I have to."

"It's too late," Maya sobbed, the stoic walls she had built around herself for years finally crumbling. "She needed a transplant six months ago. She's been living on borrowed time. All the money in the world can't buy an organ match overnight."

Adrien’s jaw clenched, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. He pushed the sports car well past the speed limit, weaving through early morning traffic like a man possessed.

They arrived at Bellweather General in record time. Adrien flanked Maya as they sprinted through the sliding glass doors and into the ICU. The smell of antiseptic and the rhythmic beeping of monitors hit Maya like a physical blow.

Dr. Evans was waiting outside Claire's room. He looked exhausted. "Maya. She's crashing. We have her on maximum dialysis, but her body is giving out."

Maya rushed to the bedside. Claire looked incredibly fragile, her skin translucent, surrounded by a terrifying array of tubes and wires. Maya collapsed into the chair beside the bed, burying her face in her mother's frail hand. "Mom, please. Please don't leave me. You promised."

Adrien stood in the doorway, watching the woman who had sacrificed everything weep over her dying mother. He pulled out his phone and dialed a number. "Get me the Chief of Medicine at Mount Sinai," he barked. "And ready the Medevac chopper. Now."

For the next four hours, Adrien turned the hospital waiting room into a war room. He leveraged every ounce of his billionaire influence. He called senators, hospital board directors, and the national transplant registry. He authorized blank checks. He was a force of nature, refusing to accept the impossible.

But biology is a cruel master that does not bow to wealth. By noon, Claire's heart monitor began to sound a frantic, erratic alarm. Doctors rushed into the room. Maya was pushed back into the hallway, screaming for her mother.

Adrien caught her, wrapping his arms around her shaking body, pressing her face into his chest so she wouldn't have to watch the desperate resuscitation efforts through the glass. He held her as she broke apart, his own tears silently falling into her hair.

"Time of death, 12:42 PM," a voice echoed from inside the room.

Maya's knees gave out. Adrien sank to the floor with her, holding her tightly as the crushing weight of grief swallowed her whole. She had fought so hard. She had humiliated herself, cleaned toilets, swallowed her pride, and risked her life, all to keep her mother alive. And in the end, it wasn't enough.

"I'm sorry," Adrien whispered fiercely, rocking her. "I am so, so sorry."

As Maya wept in the arms of the billionaire who loved her, his phone vibrated incessantly in his pocket. He ignored it. But the text messages lighting up his screen were ominous. From Richard Whitmore: Adrien, where are you? Julian called an emergency board meeting. He's citing your 'mental instability' to invoke a vote of no confidence. He's trying to take the company today.

Adrien closed his eyes. The wolves were at the door. But looking down at the broken woman in his arms, the woman who had risked everything for him, Adrien knew he couldn't lose today. He was going to burn Julian Cross to the ground.
