Chapter 4 - The Three-Second Catastrophe

Maya grabbed the lapels of Adrien’s custom tuxedo, pulled him down, and crushed her lips against his.
The silence that followed was absolute, terrifying, and profound. For a fraction of a second, Adrien stiffened in shock. But then, to Maya's absolute astonishment, he didn't push her away. Instead, his hand came up, resting lightly on her waist, and he kissed her back. It was a kiss born of desperation, a silent communication between two souls who had recognized each other in the dark.
One second. During that second, Maya's hand slipped deftly into Julian's tuxedo pocket, which was flush against her side due to the tight grouping on the landing. Her fingers closed around the cold metal of his keychain. She pulled the encrypted flash drive loose.
Two seconds. She pressed the small drive into the palm of Adrien's hand, folding his fingers over it. He felt the metal. He understood.
Three seconds. Vanessa’s scream shattered the glass-like silence of the ballroom.
It wasn't a gasp of shock; it was the shrill, furious shriek of a woman whose multi-billion-dollar prize had just been snatched from her grasp. Maya broke the kiss and stepped back, her lips tingling, her breath coming in ragged gasps.
"You bitch!" Vanessa lunged forward, her hand raised to strike Maya, but Adrien stepped smoothly between them, catching Vanessa's wrist mid-air.
"Enough," Adrien's voice was dangerously low. It commanded the entire room.
"Adrien! Are you insane?!" Julian roared, his face purple with outrage, playing the part of the offended best friend perfectly. "She's a maid! She just assaulted you in front of your fiancée and the entire board of directors! Security, arrest her!"
The security guards grabbed Maya's arms roughly. She didn't resist. She kept her eyes locked on Adrien. His hand was clenched tightly at his side, hiding the flash drive.
"Let her go," Adrien commanded the guards.
"Adrien, what are you doing?" his father, Richard Whitmore, bellowed from the bottom of the stairs, his face pale with shock. "This is an outrage! Have this woman removed and sign the damn papers!"
"There will be no signing tonight, Dad," Adrien said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. He threw the gold fountain pen onto the table. It clattered against the marble, leaving a stark black ink stain across the marriage contract. "The engagement is off. The merger is canceled."
Pandemonium erupted. Cameras flashed. Reporters who had been invited to cover the society event of the decade were now frantically typing on their phones, sensing a scandal that would rock the financial world to its core. Vanessa burst into theatrical tears, collapsing into Julian's arms. Julian glared at Adrien with a mixture of hatred and confusion.
"You're making the biggest mistake of your life, Whitmore," Julian hissed.

"I don't think so, Julian," Adrien replied coldly. He turned to the head of security. "Escort Miss Coleman to my private study. Make sure she is unharmed. Escort everyone else out of my house. The party is over."
As the guards led Maya away, the noise of the ballroom faded into a chaotic blur. She had done it. She had ruined his wedding, humiliated him in front of the world, and destroyed a billion-dollar deal. She was undoubtedly going to lose her job. But as she touched her lips, she knew she had saved his life. And for the first time in years, Maya felt absolutely terrified, and completely alive.
