Chapter 6 - The Hidden Ledger

The decryption took three hours. Adrien had to wake up his chief cybersecurity expert, swearing him to absolute secrecy, to bypass Julian’s military-grade encryption. Maya stayed by Adrien's side, brewing him black coffee and watching the lines of code cascade down the screen.

As they waited, the outside world burned. The morning news cycle had caught the scent of blood. Headlines screamed across the television in the corner of the study: BILLIONAIRE'S BAZAAR BETRAYAL! MAID STEALS THE GROOM! and WHITMORE HOLDINGS IN CRISIS AFTER SCANDALOUS KISS.

Maya felt a wave of nausea. Her face was plastered across every gossip site in the country. She was being painted as a gold-digging home-wrecker, a seductress who had manipulated her wealthy employer.

"Stop looking at it," Adrien said, reaching over to turn off the television. "It's noise. Tomorrow, we give them a new headline."

"My mother watches the morning news," Maya said, her voice cracking. "If she sees this... the stress could kill her. She's in the ICU, Adrien. Her heart can't take this kind of shock."

Adrien paused, his hands hovering over the keyboard. He looked at Maya, truly seeing the exhaustion etched into her features, the dark circles under her eyes that no amount of makeup could hide. "Elena told me you were working two jobs before you came here. That your mother is sick."

"Claire. Her name is Claire," Maya said softly. "And she's dying. The medical bills... that's why I'm here. That's why I couldn't risk getting fired. But I couldn't let them destroy you, either."

Adrien’s expression softened into something profoundly tender. He reached out and took her hand—the one with the silver scar. "Maya, I swear to you, as long as I have breath in my body, you and your mother will never want for anything ever again."

Before Maya could process the weight of his promise, the laptop beeped loudly. A green progress bar hit 100%. The screen flooded with spreadsheets, bank transfer records, and offshore account numbers located in the Cayman Islands.

Adrien leaned in, his eyes darting across the data. "There it is," he whispered, a dangerous edge to his voice. "Over four hundred million dollars siphoned from the Sinclair-Whitmore joint development fund over the last eighteen months. Directed into shell companies owned by..." He clicked a file. "Julian Cross and Vanessa Sinclair."

"They were stealing from both your families," Maya gasped.

"Vanessa was stealing from her own father to fund a private empire with Julian," Adrien concluded, his face hardening into stone. "They were going to let Whitmore Holdings take the fall for the missing funds post-merger. The SEC would have investigated my father and me. We would have faced federal prison, while they walked away with half a billion dollars and clean hands."

Adrien grabbed his phone. "I need to call my father. And then I'm calling the FBI."

Suddenly, Maya's phone rang. The shrill ringtone shattered the triumphant moment. Maya looked at the caller ID. Her blood ran cold. It was Bellweather General Hospital.

Her hands shook so badly she almost dropped the phone. She swiped to answer. "Hello?"

"Maya Coleman?" a somber voice asked. "This is Dr. Evans. I'm calling about your mother, Claire. I need you to come to the hospital immediately. Her kidneys are failing. We don't have much time."

The phone slipped from Maya's fingers, clattering onto the floor. The world tilted on its axis, spinning into blackness.
