Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Coup

Two days later, the atmosphere inside the glass-walled boardroom of Whitmore Holdings was toxic. The twenty members of the board of directors sat around the massive mahogany table, murmuring anxiously. At the head of the table sat Richard Whitmore, looking ten years older than he had at the gala.
At the opposite end stood Julian Cross, exuding the confident aura of a man who had already won. Vanessa Sinclair sat in a leather chair near the window, looking appropriately solemn, wearing a designer black dress as if she were attending a funeral.
"Gentlemen, and ladies," Julian began, pacing slowly. "We are facing an unprecedented crisis. The stock has dropped twenty-two percent in forty-eight hours. The Sinclair merger, which was guaranteed to secure our market dominance, has been violently derailed by the erratic, scandalous behavior of our CEO, Adrien Whitmore."
"Adrien has been under a lot of stress," Richard interrupted, his voice lacking its usual thunder. "We just need to delay the vote. Let him explain."
"Explain what, Richard?" Vanessa snapped, playing the heartbroken victim flawlessly. "He humiliated me in front of the world. He engaged in a sordid affair with a maid and brought shame to both our families. Sinclair International will not do business with a company led by a madman."
"Exactly," Julian nodded smoothly. "Under Section 4 of the corporate bylaws, I motion for an immediate vote of no confidence to remove Adrien Whitmore as CEO. For the stability of the company, I am prepared to step in as interim CEO to renegotiate the merger with the Sinclair family and salvage our stock."
Several board members nodded in agreement. The trap was perfectly sprung.
"All those in favor of removing Adrien Whitmore?" Julian asked, a triumphant smirk touching his lips.
Before a single hand could be raised, the heavy oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a resounding crash.
Adrien strode into the room. He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He wore a sharp, charcoal-grey suit, and his eyes were cold enough to freeze hell over. Flanking him were two federal agents in dark suits. And walking right beside him, her head held high despite her red-rimmed eyes, was Maya Coleman.
"This meeting is illegal," Adrien declared, his voice cutting through the stunned silence like a whip. "And there will be no vote."
Julian recovered quickly, scoffing. "Adrien, you don't have the authority to stop a board vote. And you brought the maid here? Have you completely lost your mind?"
"I brought the woman who saved this company," Adrien countered, slamming a thick stack of printed documents onto the boardroom table. "And I brought the FBI."
Vanessa stood up abruptly, the color draining from her perfectly manicured face. "What is the meaning of this?"
"The meaning, Vanessa, is that you and Julian are sloppy," Adrien said, walking slowly toward them. "You thought my audits were blind, but you forgot that a household maid sees everything. Maya found the encrypted drive Julian kept on his keychain. The one containing the ledgers of the four hundred million dollars you two siphoned from the joint development funds."
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members shouted, scrambling to grab the documents Adrien had thrown on the table. Richard Whitmore stood up, his eyes wide with shock as he stared at the banking transfers bearing Julian's digital signature.
"This is a forgery!" Julian shouted, panic finally cracking his polished veneer. He backed away from the table. "He's making this up to cover his own incompetence!"
"The IP addresses log back to your private terminal, Mr. Cross," one of the federal agents stated calmly, stepping forward. "We've already verified the offshore accounts. The Cayman authorities froze the assets an hour ago."
Vanessa looked wildly at Julian, realizing the walls were closing in. "Julian told me it was secure!" she shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at him. "He said you would never find out! It was his idea to bankrupt you, Adrien! I just wanted the money!"

Julian stared at her in absolute horror. "Shut up, you idiot!" he hissed.
But it was too late. The confession echoed in the silent boardroom.
