Chapter 3 - The Silent Scream

The dining room fell into an awkward, stunned silence.

The wealthy guests paused with their spoons halfway to their mouths.

"Maria!" Evelyn snapped, her sweet facade dropping for a fraction of a second.

"Control your child. Why is she in here?"

Maria rushed forward, her face flushed with absolute terror.

"I am so sorry, Mr. Sterling. Miss Evelyn. She slipped away from me."

Maria reached out to grab Lily's hand.

But Lily yanked her arm away.

She planted her feet firmly on the expensive Persian rug.

She stared fiercely into Arthur's tired, sunken eyes.

Then, she raised her small hands.

Her fingers began moving frantically, slicing through the silent air.

Most of the guests chuckled nervously.

A wealthy investor at the end of the table scoffed.

"What on earth is the child doing?"

Evelyn let out a high-pitched, mocking laugh.

"Oh, poor thing," Evelyn sighed, rolling her eyes.

"She’s deaf, you see. She just wants attention. She doesn't know any better."

Evelyn reached over to push Lily out of the way.

But Arthur suddenly raised his hand.

His trembling fingers formed a sharp, commanding gesture.

"Stop."

Arthur's voice was weak, but it carried the weight of a billionaire accustomed to total obedience.

The entire room froze.

Arthur didn't look at Evelyn.

He didn't look at his stunned guests.

His eyes were locked entirely on the little girl in the faded cotton dress.

Because Arthur Sterling knew exactly what those hands were saying.

Before he built his empire, before the money and the fame...

Arthur had been married to a wonderful woman named Claire.

Claire had lost her hearing in her twenties.

For ten years, Arthur had spoken to his beloved late wife entirely in sign language.

He had never forgotten it.

He looked at Lily’s small, frantic hands.

The child repeated the gesture, her eyes pleading.

Don't. Eat.
