Chapter 4 - The White Powder

Arthur's heart began to pound against his ribs.
The heavy fog in his brain seemed to part for just a second.
He slowly lowered his silver spoon.
He pushed the steaming bowl of truffle soup an inch away from him.
Evelyn’s smile faltered.
Her hand instinctively tightened around the handle of the serving spoon.
"Arthur, darling, what are you doing?" she asked, her voice tight.
"The soup will get cold."
Arthur ignored her. He looked at Lily and raised his own hands.
To the absolute shock of the entire room, the billionaire signed back.
Why?
Lily took a deep breath.
Her tiny fingers moved with rapid, practiced precision.
She puts white powder in your dinner.
Every night.
Arthur stared at the girl, his blood running cold.
He looked at Evelyn, who was now staring at his hands in horror.
"What... what is she doing? What are you doing?" Evelyn stammered.
"That child cannot even hear what she’s accusing me of! She's crazy!"
Evelyn turned to the security guards standing by the doors.
"Remove her! Now!"
But Arthur slammed his hand on the table.
"Nobody moves!" he roared, finding a sudden burst of adrenaline.
He looked back at Lily.
Show me.
Lily reached deep into the pocket of her little dress.
She pulled out her small, clenched fist.
She opened her fingers and dropped something right onto the white tablecloth.
It was a tiny, clear plastic packet.
Inside, there were remnants of a crushed, chalky white powder.
"I found it," Lily signed, her hands shaking slightly.
"Beneath the kitchen sink. In the trash. Wrapped in a napkin."
The room erupted into gasps.
Maria, the maid, covered her mouth in absolute shock.
Evelyn leaped up from her chair, her face pale as a ghost.
May you like
"This is an outrage!" she shrieked.
"That maid put her up to this! Maria is trying to frame me to get money!"
