Chapter 9 - The Fall from Grace

Police sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder with every passing second.
Arthur’s security team had already made the call.
There was no escape for Evelyn or Dr. Vance.
Realizing her life of luxury was over, Evelyn turned completely feral.
"It was his idea!" she screamed, lunging toward Dr. Vance and scratching at his face.
"He supplied the drugs! He told me it wouldn't hurt you, Arthur! I was manipulated!"
Dr. Vance shoved her away, his professional demeanor shattered into a million pieces.
"You greedy witch! You came to me because you couldn't wait for him to die naturally!"
They tore each other apart right there in the dining room.
The wealthy investors watched in absolute disgust.
When the police stormed through the heavy oak doors, it was almost a relief.
Officers read them their rights, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Evelyn’s delicate wrists.
She cried, she begged, she pleaded for Arthur to look at her.
But Arthur had already turned his back.
As they dragged the crying fiancée and the disgraced doctor out into the flashing red and blue lights, the toxic fog in Arthur’s life finally began to lift.
He sat heavily in his chair, running a hand over his face.
He was exhausted. He was heartbroken.
But for the first time in six months, he knew he was going to live.
He looked across the room.
Maria was clutching Lily, trembling with leftover adrenaline.
Arthur slowly stood up.
He walked over to the terrified maid and her silent, observant daughter.

He didn't speak a word.
He just slowly sank to his knees, right on the expensive Persian rug, so he was eye-level with the seven-year-old girl.
