Chapter 6 - The Hidden Eye

The silence in the room was no longer awkward. It was deadly.
Arthur looked at the man he had trusted with his life.
He looked at the woman he was about to give half his empire to.
"You," Arthur whispered, the betrayal burning in his throat. "You did this to me."
Evelyn burst into theatrical tears.
She fell to her knees, grabbing Arthur’s legs.
"No! Arthur, it wasn't me! It was Maria!"
She pointed wildly at the terrified maid.
"Maria cooks the meals! Maria brings the plates! She wants you dead so she can sue the estate!"
"Dr. Vance will tell you! We've suspected her for weeks!"
Dr. Vance quickly nodded, sweating profusely.
"It's true, Arthur. The maid has access to everything."
Maria sobbed, holding Lily. "No, sir! I swear on my life, I would never!"
Arthur looked torn.
His mind was still foggy from the drug residue in his system from the days before.
What if Evelyn was right? What if it was the maid?
He looked down at Lily.
The little girl hadn't moved. She hadn't cried.
She stepped forward again.
She looked at Evelyn crying on the floor.
She looked at Dr. Vance sweating in his expensive suit.
Then, Lily raised her hands one more time.
She signed a single, powerful word to Arthur.
Camera.
Arthur frowned. What camera?
Lily pointed a small finger toward the hallway that led to the kitchen.
In the vent. Above the stove.
Arthur’s eyes went wide.
Years ago, after a series of thefts by a former chef, Arthur had secretly installed a micro-camera in the kitchen vent.
Only he and the head of security knew about it.

And apparently, the little deaf girl who spent hours sitting quietly in the kitchen corner had noticed the tiny blinking red light.
"Bring me my laptop," Arthur commanded his security chief.
