Chapter 11 - Justice Served

Within forty-eight hours, the legal earthquake that Luka Moretti unleashed completely reshaped the corporate landscape of the city. Arthur Vance was arrested on federal charges of corporate fraud, extortion, and involuntary manslaughter related to the fabricated investigation that had driven my father to ruin years ago. Facing decades in federal prison, Arthur immediately began cooperating with prosecutors, throwing his protégé under the bus to save his own skin. Julian Vance was arrested at the Moretti estate gates before he could even crawl back to his car, hauled away in handcuffs by federal marshals while photographers snapped flashing pictures from the roadside. The headline on the front page of every major financial newspaper the following morning read: EMPIRE FALLS: MORETTI HOLDINGS EXPOSES VANCE CORPORATE CORRUPTION. Back inside the cliffside estate, the morning sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master study, bathing the room in a warm, golden glow. I sat in the velvet armchair, cradling my daughter as she slept peacefully against my chest, her tiny chest rising and falling in perfect rhythm. Luka walked into the room carrying a tray with two cups of coffee and a small plate of pastries. He set it gently on the desk and walked over, kneeling beside my chair not out of desperation like Julian had, but with a quiet, respectful devotion that made my heart skip a beat. “The federal marshals have secured all your father’s stolen assets,” Luka said softly, looking up at me with warm, steady eyes. “The shipping company is officially back under your name, Clara. You and your daughter never have to worry about the world ever again.” I looked down at him, tracing the hard lines of his tattooed face—a face that looked terrifying to the rest of the world, but felt like the safest harbor I had ever known. “You didn't just protect us, Luka,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “You gave me back my life. You gave my daughter a future.” Luka reached out, gently placing his large, tattooed hand over my fingers holding the baby. “I told you at the hospital, Clara,” he murmured, his voice husky with suppressed emotion. “The kind of man I am is the kind who never leaves a child unprotected. And I intend to spend the rest of my life proving it to both of you.”
