Chapter 8 - The First Strike

The next morning, the financial district of the city was buzzing with rumors that sent shockwaves through the corporate elite. Arthur Vance, the senior founding partner of Vance & Associates and Julian’s untouchable mentor, arrived at his thirty-fourth-floor corner office expecting a normal Monday of high-powered acquisitions and golf club networking. Instead, he found three federal marshals and two senior auditors standing by his mahogany desk, holding thick binders stamped with federal seizure warrants. “Gentlemen, this is an egregious mistake! Do you know who I am? I demand to speak to the district attorney!” Arthur bellowed, his face turning a deep, furious shade of crimson as he banged his fist on the desk. The lead auditor didn’t even look up from his tablet. He simply slid a single document across the polished wood. It was an exhaustive, airtight financial audit detailing fifteen years of corporate embezzlement, hostile takeovers, and fraudulent asset seizures—including the illegal bankruptcy manipulation that had destroyed my father’s shipping company back when I was a teenager. At the bottom of the document, authorizing the immediate freeze of all firm accounts and personal holdings, was a signature signed in bold black ink: LUKA MORETTI — MANAGING DIRECTOR, MORETTI HOLDINGS. Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. He staggered backward, clutching his chest as the reality of what was happening crashed down upon him. Meanwhile, across town at the firm’s junior offices, Julian Vance was having an equally catastrophic morning. He had tried to log into his corporate accounts to pay for his morning coffee, only to find every single credit card declined and his personal checking accounts showing a balance of zero. Panic-stricken, Julian rushed into the partners' boardroom, only to find his colleagues whispering among themselves, casting sideways glances full of disgust and fear. “Julian! Have you seen the news? Moretti Holdings just initiated a hostile takeover of our entire corporate portfolio! They’ve frozen all partner distributions, and the SEC is auditing every single case we’ve filed in the last five years!” a junior associate hissed, grabbing Julian by the arm. Julian’s phone began ringing incessantly—debt collectors, mortgage lenders, and luxury car dealerships demanding immediate payment for overdue balances. His pristine, untouchable corporate life was unraveling faster than a cheap sweater, and he hadn't even figured out why. Desperate, humiliated, and running on pure panic, Julian grabbed his car keys and sped toward the address stamped on the Moretti Holdings legal notice—a sprawling cliffside estate that he never knew existed.
