Chapter 7 - The Lion’s Den

The transition from my old life to my new reality happened in the span of a single afternoon. When Luka’s black Mercedes SUV pulled through the iron security gates of an estate perched high on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, I barely recognized the world outside my window. The house was a masterpiece of modern architecture—dark glass, polished concrete, and sprawling gardens surrounded by towering security walls. But more than the luxury, it was the absolute peace that enveloped the air. Inside, a team of professional pediatric nurses and private housekeepers greeted us with warm, respectful smiles, taking my bags and gently lifting my sleeping daughter into a state-of-the-art nursery equipped with everything a mother could dream of. I sat in a plush velvet armchair in the master study, holding a cup of steaming chamomile tea, still feeling like I was floating inside a waking dream. Luka walked into the room, having removed his suit jacket to reveal a crisp black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, exposing the intricate black-and-grey ink swirling across his forearms. He poured himself a glass of water and leaned against the mahogany desk, watching me with a steady, reassuring gaze. “You’re safe here, Clara. No one will ever touch you, and no one will ever look down on you again,” Luka said softly, his voice carrying an anchor of absolute certainty. I looked up at him, my heart heavy with a mixture of overwhelming gratitude and lingering fear. “Luka... what you did back at the hospital... signing her birth certificate... won’t that cause legal chaos? Julian is a lawyer. If he finds out—”. “Let him find out,” Luka interrupted, a dark, sharp smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. “In fact, I’m counting on it. Julian thinks he owns the world because his firm handles corporate filings for the city elite. But he doesn't know how deep the roots go. That birth certificate isn't just a piece of paper, Clara. It’s a legal landmine. And the moment Julian tries to step on it, his entire world is going to blow up in his face.” Just as he finished speaking, his secure encrypted phone buzzed on the desk. Luka glanced at the caller ID, and a cold, predatory smile touched his lips. He pressed speakerphone. A frantic, breathless voice echoed through the quiet study—a voice I recognized instantly across the room, making my blood run cold. “Moretti! What the hell is the meaning of this?!” Julian Vance’s voice screamed through the speaker, trembling with a mixture of blind rage and sheer terror. “You put your name on my child’s birth certificate! My lawyers are already drawing up forgery charges, custody injunctions, and federal fraud complaints! You have twenty-four hours to undo this, or I will ruin you!” Luka didn’t even blink. He leaned closer to the phone, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm register that made me shiver. “Run along, Julian. Pack your bags, call your mistress, and enjoy your penthouse while you still have the keys. Because tomorrow morning... I’m coming for everything you stole.”
