Chapter 2 - The Shadow in Black

The hospital corridor grew strangely quiet after Julian’s departure, as if the universe itself was holding its breath. I pressed my forehead against the cool glass of the window, trying to steady my erratic breathing and figure out how I was going to pay rent, buy formula, and survive the next twenty-four hours without collapsing. A nurse bustled into the room, her arms laden with discharge forms, a plastic bassinet, and a blue folder containing my newborn daughter’s official birth certificate. She took one look at my tear-stained face and offered a sympathetic, deeply exhausted smile. “Mr. Vance is a very busy man, dear. Don’t let it get to you. Men like that rarely understand what we go through,” she murmured gently, setting the paperwork on the rolling tray beside my bed. Before I could sign my name on the dotted line, a heavy shadow fell across the doorway. I looked up, expecting a doctor or a hospital administrator, but my breath caught instantly in my throat. He was tall, powerfully built, and dressed entirely in black—from his tailored matte-black shirt down to his heavy combat boots. Tattoos covered his muscular hands, crawled up his thick neck, and traced the hard, striking angles of his face in intricate, sweeping patterns. His presence commanded the entire room, radiating a dark, dangerous energy that made the hairs on my arms stand on end. He walked straight past Julian’s lingering ghost in the hallway without moving an inch out of his way, his sharp gaze fixed entirely on me. He stopped directly in front of my bed, towering over the small rolling bassinet. His dark, piercing eyes dropped slowly to the sleeping infant in my arms, and for a fleeting second, the terrifying, hard edge of his face dissolved into something remarkably tender. Then he looked back up at me. “He’s a coward,” the stranger said, his voice deep, gravelly, and laced with a quiet, menacing authority. I stared at him, my instincts flaring up in a mixture of fear and defiance. “Excuse me? Who are you? Security!” I reached blindly for the call button on the wall. The tattooed man didn't flinch. He didn't step back. Instead, he let out a low, humorless chuckle that vibrated deep within his chest. “And what kind of man are you?” I demanded, clutching my baby tighter against my chest. For a moment, he said nothing. His gaze lingered on my daughter’s tiny, moving fingers. Then he answered with absolute conviction. “The kind who never leaves a child unprotected.”
