Chapter 3 - The Signature That Changed Everything

Before I could process his words or figure out whether I should scream for help, the stranger moved with terrifying, fluid speed. He reached out with a tattooed, heavy hand—not to grab us, but to take the medical folder directly from the nurse’s trembling fingers. The nurse, who had been opening her mouth to scold him, suddenly froze, staring at a small metallic pin pinned to the inside lapel of his black jacket. Her face went completely pale, and without uttering a single word of protest, she stepped backward, silently exiting the room and pulling the door shut behind her. I was left alone in the room with this intimidating giant. Inside the folder was my daughter’s official birth certificate—a stark white document with a glaring, empty blank space next to the word FATHER. Julian hadn’t signed it. He had refused, claiming he needed to “verify legal counsel” before attaching his name to a child born during a rocky marriage. The stranger pulled out a sleek, expensive-looking black fountain pen from his inner pocket. He uncapped it with a sharp click. And before I could scream, before I could grab the paper away, he pressed the nib firmly against the paper and signed his own name in bold, sweeping cursive directly on the line marked: FATHER. My breath caught in my lungs, turning into a choking gasp. “What are you doing? Are you insane? You can’t just sign that! You’re a complete stranger!” I shouted, panic surging through my veins like ice water. The stranger calmly capped the pen, sliding it back into his pocket with deliberate slowness. He looked directly into my eyes, his dark gaze burning with an intensity that made my knees weak. “My name is Luka Moretti,” he said softly, the name carrying an invisible weight that seemed to press down on the very walls of the hospital room. I froze. I had never met Luka Moretti before that day. At least… that was what I believed. Because as those words settled over me, a terrifying realization washed over my soul: Luka Moretti had not walked into that hospital by accident. He had been waiting for Julian to leave. And he had been waiting for me.
