Chapter 10 - The Unlocking of the Truth

The upper office of the dry dock was an impenetrable bunker made of reinforced concrete, bulletproof glass, and multiple computer terminals monitoring the harbor perimeter.

Leo sat in a leather armchair by the roaring electric fireplace, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, an oxygen cannula resting neatly beneath his nose.

When the heavy steel door hissed open, Leo jumped, his eyes widening as Nadia walked in, draped in Darian’s oversized tuxedo jacket with her feet wrapped in clean white bandages.

"Nadia!" Leo cried out, trying to push himself out of the chair.

Nadia rushed across the floor, falling to her knees beside him and wrapping her arms tightly around his neck.

"I’m here, Leo. You’re safe, we’re both safe," she whispered, burying her face into his shoulder as the adrenaline of the evening finally began to subside.

Leo pulled back, his eyes darting between the magnificent plum silk beneath the jacket and Darian Costa standing silently by the doorway like a towering sentinel.

"They came to the apartment with assault rifles, Nadia," Leo said, his voice trembling.

"Mr. Costa's men threw me into an armored van right before three black sedans riddled our front windows with bullets."

"They tried to kill us."

"Arthur Pendleton tried to kill us," Nadia corrected coldly, rising to her feet as her expression hardened back into pure stone.

She reached behind her neck, unfastening the heavy platinum clasp of the garnet choker.

The antique jewel fell into her palm, heavy, cold, and loaded with the ghosts of their stolen childhood.

Darian walked over to the central mahogany desk, placing a jeweler’s magnifying lamp and a fine titanium screwdriver upon the green blotter.

"Let's see what Nicholas Sterling left behind," Darian said, his voice low with anticipation.

Nadia sat at the desk, using the screwdriver with delicate, practiced hands to pry open the concealed filigree panel on the back of the garnet setting.

With a faint metallic click, a tiny micro-aperture opened, revealing a micro-engraved metallic foil strip sealed beneath resin.

"It’s not just an encryption key," Nadia said, her eyes widening as she held the strip under the high-intensity lamp.

"It’s a master access token for the Swiss maritime depository in Geneva."

"My father didn't just keep paper carbon receipts; he backed up the entire municipal port audit onto an encrypted server."

"The contracts, the inspection bribes, the offshore payments signed by Arthur Pendleton and his son Julian—everything is there."

Darian leaned over her shoulder, his chest pressing against her back as he read the numbers etched into the foil.

"This is enough to freeze every single Pendleton asset from here to London," Darian said, his eyes gleaming with lethal satisfaction.

"The federal banking commission will have no choice but to issue emergency warrants within two hours of seeing this."

"There’s more," Nadia whispered, pointing to a series of shipping manifest numbers dated the exact day of the warehouse fire.

"The cargo inside Pier Fourteen wasn't industrial machinery."

"It was three tons of illicit military-grade weapons Julian Pendleton was smuggling for the Eastern European syndicate."

"My father discovered the shipment and threatened to call the Coast Guard."

"Arthur didn't burn the pier to steal the company; he burned it to destroy the evidence before federal agents could search the hull."

"He murdered my father and eighty port workers just to save his corrupt son from a treason charge."

A suffocating silence descended upon the office, broken only by the steady hum of the computer monitors.

Darian straightened up, his hand dropping to the heavy grip of his firearm, his face darkening into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

He had operated in the underworld for fifteen years, dealing with brutal men and violent turf wars, but burning eighty innocent dockworkers to cover up treason crossed a line even the streets despised.

"Marco!" Darian roared toward the open doorway.

Marco stepped into the room immediately, snapping to attention.

"Get the state attorney general on the secure line," Darian ordered, his voice echoing off the concrete walls like thunder.

"Tell him the Costa syndicate is delivering the Pendleton treason dossier on one condition."

"What condition, boss?" Marco asked.

Darian turned, looking down at Nadia as she sat with her father's legacy clutched in her hand, her eyes blazing with regal authority.

"Every single dock, terminal, and warehouse stolen from Nicholas Sterling is returned to Nadia Sterling by sunset tomorrow," Darian stated with absolute finality.

"And Julian and Arthur Pendleton don't get protective custody."

"They get thrown into the general population at the state penitentiary where Nicholas Sterling’s dockworkers can say hello."

Marco grinned, nodding sharply before rushing out to execute the order.

Nadia looked up at Darian, the plum silk slipping slightly from her shoulder, revealing the raw strength of the woman who had survived the ashes.

"They will fight back, Darian," she said softly.

"Arthur still controls the private harbor militia; they won't go down without burning the city."

Darian reached down, taking her hand and pulling her up until she was standing inches from his chest.

May you like

"Let them try to burn it," Darian whispered, his cold blue eyes locking onto hers with an unbreakable promise.

"I’ve spent my whole life living in the fire, Nadia."
