Chapter 4 - The Red Carpet Ambush

The cold mountain wind bit into Nadia’s bare shoulders the second she stepped out onto the red carpet.

She didn't flinch, nor did she huddle her arms against the chill; she drew a deep breath, straightened her spine, and rose to her full height.

Darian stepped around the back of the Maybach, adjusting the lapels of his tuxedo before extending his left arm toward her.

The gesture was formal, almost possessive, designed to showcase his ownership over the prize he was parading into the lion's den.

Nadia placed her gloved hand lightly upon his forearm, her touch firm and steady, refusing to lean on him for balance on the treacherous ice.

Camera flashes detonated in rapid succession along the velvet ropes, turning the snowbank into an blinding glare of white light.

Reporters shouted over the roar of idling limousines, their microphones thrusting forward like spears.

"Mr. Costa! Over here! Mr. Costa, is it true your port logistics license is under investigation by the federal board?"

"Darian! Who is your guest? Is she connected to the European investment syndicate?"

Darian ignored the press completely, marching forward with his chin raised, daring any photographer to step across the security boundary.

Nadia walked beside him with measured, rhythmic strides, matching his long gait without ever appearing hurried.

She didn't look at the cameras, nor did she shield her eyes from the blinding glare.

She stared directly ahead at the towering brass double doors of the Pendleton ballroom, her expression carved from stone.

A veteran society columnist standing near the rope gasped audibly, frantically whispering into her digital recorder.

"Look at that neckline... that’s custom Milanese silk, but the poise... who on earth is that woman?"

"She looks like she owns the ground Costa is walking on."

Darian heard the remark, and Nadia felt the muscle in his forearm twitch under her fingers.

He had expected the photographers to snap pictures of an awkward, terrified girl clutching his arm like a life raft.

Instead, the cameras were tracking her, drawn to the severe beauty of the plum gown and the imperial tilt of her head.

They reached the heated vestibule where two private security guards in charcoal uniforms checked engraved gold invitations against a master tablet.

The head of security, a thick-necked man with graying temples, recognized Darian immediately and stiffened with poorly concealed hostility.

"Mr. Costa," the guard said coldly, glancing down at the electronic manifest.

"Mr. Pendleton instructed us to verify all credentials personally tonight."

"You have one guest allocation; may we have the lady’s name for the high-table register?"

Darian leaned in, preparing to deliver a mocking pseudonym designed to plant the seeds for his grand humiliation later.

Before he could speak, Nadia stepped forward half an inch, effectively cutting Darian out of the conversation.

"Nadia Sterling," she said, her voice ringing clear, crisp, and authoritative through the marble entry hall.

Darian’s head snapped toward her, his jaw tightening in sudden fury at her breaking protocol.

He had told her to use the fake corporate title; he had explicitly ordered her not to invent aristocratic names.

The security guard frowned, tapping the glass screen of his tablet with a stylus.

"Sterling? I don't have a Nadia Sterling registered under the Costa party."

"Check the legacy ledger from twenty-fourteen," Nadia commanded, her tone dropping into an effortless cadence of generational authority.

"My family’s endowment funded the very terrace this ballroom was built upon, Sergeant."

"If Arthur Pendleton wants to pretend my father’s seat at Table Four doesn't exist, I’ll be happy to explain the discrepancy to the press outside."

The guard’s face drained of color as he looked up from the screen, his eyes darting between Nadia’s cold glare and the heavy garnet choker at her throat.

The name Sterling carried ghosts in this city, ghosts that involved billions in harbor assets and a tragic, unsolved catastrophe.

"Of... of course, Miss Sterling," the guard stammered, frantically swiping his master pass across the turnstile.

"Table Four is prepared. Welcome back."

The heavy glass doors parted, releasing a wave of brass orchestra music, clinking crystal, and the perfume of two hundred billionaires into the foyer.

Darian gripped her elbow, his fingers digging painfully through the fabric of her coat as he pulled her roughly into an alcove out of earshot.

"What the hell was that?" he hissed, his eyes blazing with genuine rage.

"Sterling? You gave them the name of a dead banking dynasty! Are you completely out of your mind?"

Nadia turned to face him, stepping directly into his personal space, completely unbothered by the violent promise in his posture.

"You wanted a weapon against Pendleton, didn't you?" she whispered, her lips inches from his ear.

"You wanted to see the blood drain from his arrogant old face before the dessert course?"

"Watch what happens when you introduce me as a Sterling, Darian."

"Your little maid joke would have gotten you laughed out of the room like a clown."

"My name will bring Arthur Pendleton to his knees before midnight."

Darian stared at her, his pulse racing, caught between the terrifying realization that he knew nothing about the woman who cleaned his floors and the intoxicating prospect of destroying his greatest rival.

"Who are you really, Nadia?" he demanded, his voice thick with unease.

May you like

"I’m the maid who knows where all your bodies are buried," she replied coldly.

"Now take my arm, Mr. Costa. The vultures are waiting."
