Chapter 15 - The Queen of the Docks

Two weeks later, a brilliant, crystalline winter sun rose over the harbor, reflecting off the calm blue waters of the bay.

The blackened ruins of Pier Fourteen were already surrounded by heavy demolition cranes and construction crews clearing away the twisted wreckage.

A massive banner hung across the newly renovated administrative gates, emblazoned in bold navy-and-gold letters:

STERLING-COSTA MARITIME LOGISTICS

Inside the penthouse office of the newly reclaimed terminal tower, floor-to-ceiling windows offered an unobstructed panoramic view of the entire shipping fleet.

Leo sat in a plush modern leather chair, his breathing clear and steady, laughing as he reviewed architectural designs for the new harbor medical clinic with a private doctor.

The medical specialists Darian had flown in from Germany had stabilized Leo's lungs, ensuring he would make a full recovery in the coming months.

The heavy mahogany double doors opened, and Nadia walked into the sunlit room.

She wore a perfectly tailored navy-blue wool pantsuit, her chestnut hair styled into a soft, elegant wave over her shoulders, looking every bit the corporate empress she was born to be.

At her throat rested the antique garnet necklace, its platinum setting polished until it caught every ray of morning light.

Leo looked up, a bright, radiant smile breaking across his youthful face.

"The union stewards just ratified the new worker safety contract, Nadia," Leo said proudly, holding up a leather-bound folder.

"Every family affected by the fire three years ago is receiving a full lifetime pension from the estate."

"Father would be proud of you, Nadia."

Nadia smiled warmly, kissing Leo’s cheek before walking over to the wide glass window that looked down upon the bustling docks.

Footsteps sounded behind her—the same slow, deliberate strikes of custom leather soles that she had listened to from the cold marble floor of the Costa manor.

Darian stepped up beside her, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit without a tie, an unlit cigar held between his fingers.

He looked out at the dozens of cargo ships entering the harbor, all bearing the combined crest of their new empire.

"You make a terrifying CEO, Miss Sterling," Darian said, his gravelly voice filled with quiet amusement.

"The city council agreed to every single one of your terms in less than fifteen minutes yesterday."

"They learned what happens to men who underestimate a woman who knows how to clean up their mess," Nadia replied, turning her head to meet his intense blue eyes.

A comfortable, electric silence stretched between them as they stood shoulder to shoulder in the golden light.

"I had my housekeeper clean the grand foyer this morning," Darian remarked casually, watching a crane lift a container onto an outbound freighter.

"Did she get the edges by the baseboards?" Nadia asked, a teasing smirk dancing on her lips.

"She used a mop like a normal person," Darian chuckled, shaking his head.

"The foyer looks terrible."

"The marble has completely lost its charm without you glaring at my shoes."

Nadia let out a soft laugh, turning her entire body to face him, resting her hands against the lapels of his charcoal coat.

"Are you saying you miss your maid, Mr. Costa?" she whispered, her amber eyes sparkling with dangerous warmth.

Darian’s arms wrapped firmly around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest, exactly as he had done on the dance floor in front of the entire city.

"I never had a maid, Nadia," Darian growled softly, his voice dropping into pure, raw devotion.

"I had a queen who was hiding in my house, waiting to show me how small my ambitions really were."

"I thought taking you to that gala would be a joke on Pendleton."

"The joke was on me; I walked into that ballroom thinking I owned you, and I walked out realizing you owned every piece of my soul."

Nadia reached up, her fingers threading through his dark hair, pulling his face down toward hers until their breaths mingled.

"You're not a bad partner, Darian," she whispered against his lips.

"For a thug who tracks mud across my floors."

"Then let's run this city together," Darian said, his mouth capturing hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their unbroken alliance beneath the winter sun.

High society had tried to bury the maid in the dirt, but they had forgotten that seeds grow best in the dark.

And from the ashes of their past, the King and Queen of the harbor had finally claimed their unyielding throne.
