Chapter 9 - The Fortress by the Docks

The armored SUV tore through the heavy wooden barrier of the service gate, the reinforced steel bumper shattering the timbers into kindling.

Nadia sat huddled in the leather seat, her chest heaving as the vehicle hurtled down the winding mountain road away from Pendleton Manor.

Her bare feet were scraped, dotted with crimson spots of blood that stained the floor mats of the vehicle.

Darian stripped off his black tuxedo jacket and threw it roughly around her bare shoulders.

The heavy wool was hot from his body, carrying the sharp scent of gunpowder, cedarwood, and the raw adrenaline of their escape.

"You're bleeding," he said gruffly, pulling a clean white handkerchief from his vest and kneeling on the floor of the SUV before her.

Nadia watched in silence as the most feared crime boss in the state gently lifted her foot, carefully wiping the icy grime and blood from her sole.

His fingers were surprisingly light, avoiding the deepest cuts with deliberate tenderness.

"You don't have to do that," she said, her voice dropping into a quiet murmur against the roar of the engine.

"I’ve had worse than broken glass from cleaning your terrace."

Darian stopped, his hand resting beneath her ankle, his ice-blue eyes lifting to meet hers in the dim green glow of the dashboard lights.

"Don't ever mention cleaning my floors again, Nadia," he said, his voice raw with an emotion he clearly struggled to suppress.

"That girl died the moment you walked into that ballroom tonight."

"You are Nicholas Sterling’s heir, and tomorrow morning, this entire city is going to know that Arthur Pendleton is a thieving murderer."

Nadia looked down at his face, seeing the fierce, unyielding loyalty burning behind his hardened features.

"Why are you doing this, Darian?" she asked, leaning forward, searching his eyes.

"You could have handed me over to Arthur in exchange for the deep-water port permits."

"You could have walked away with everything you ever wanted without firing a single shot."

Darian’s jaw clenched, his thumb rubbing the side of her ankle before he let her foot gently rest back down.

"Pendleton offered me thirty percent of the harbor revenue last month if I agreed to eliminate the remaining Sterling claimants," Darian admitted, the brutal truth hanging heavy between them.

Nadia stiffened, her breath hitching in her throat as her hand instinctively pulled the lapels of his jacket tighter around her chest.

"And why didn't you take his offer?" she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Because I don't take orders from cowardly old men who burn buildings to steal another man's work," Darian snarled, rising back onto the leather seat beside her.

"And because when I watched you scrub that floor yesterday, taking every insult without bending your back, I knew you had more steel in your spine than every aristocrat in that room combined."

"I don't serve cowards, Nadia. I partner with survivors."

The SUV descended from the mountain fog, entering the industrial district where towering cranes and shipping containers loomed like black giants against the frozen bay.

They pulled through a heavy steel security gate topped with concertina wire, entering the fortified perimeter of Costa’s private dockside warehouse.

Dozens of armed men in tactical gear flanked the yard, their weapons raised, escorting the vehicle into the massive indoor dry dock.

As the engine shut off, Nadia grabbed Darian’s forearm, stopping him before he could step out onto the concrete.

"My brother," she said, her voice cracking with the first genuine display of terror she had shown all night.

"Leo is alone in the tenement on Tenth Street."

"If Arthur’s men figure out who I am, they will go to that apartment."

Darian looked into her panicked eyes, reaching up to gently cup the side of her face, his thumb brushing away a stray lock of hair that had escaped her chignon.

"Marco sent three squads to Tenth Street forty minutes ago, before the soup was even served," Darian said calmly.

"Your brother is already here, Nadia."

"He’s in the upper executive quarters, with his medicine, a doctor, and two enforcers guarding the door."

Nadia stared at him, the heavy walls she had built around her heart for three agonizing years beginning to crack beneath the weight of his unexpected care.

Tears welled in her eyes, but she blinked them back, refusing to break down before the battle was truly won.

"Thank you, Darian," she whispered, her hand resting over his on her cheek.

Darian leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as his arm wrapped securely around her waist once more.

"Save your thanks until we get your father’s empire back," he whispered back.

"Now come inside; we have a safe to crack."
