Chapter 14 - The Ashes of Nicholas Sterling

Darian carefully stepped over the first wire, his tactical flashlight illuminating the deep tunnel stretching toward the sea.

Nadia followed his exact footprints, her breathing calm and controlled despite the lethal web of wires surrounding them.

The sound of water sloshing heavily against timber echoed from the deep end of the vault chamber ahead.

Through an arched doorway reinforced with rusted iron straps, a flickering kerosene lantern cast long, jittery shadows across the stone walls.

Julian Pendleton was on his knees, desperately trying to start the sputtering diesel engine of an auxiliary drainage pump that cleared water from the escape canal.

Arthur Pendleton sat on an overturned wooden crate, coughing blood into a white silk handkerchief, the chrome revolver trembling in his spotted grip.

Two heavy leather bags stuffed with gold bars sat at his feet, their weight pulling down the damp floorboards of the private slipway.

Darian stepped into the threshold of the chamber, his rifle leveled directly at Arthur’s forehead.

"Drop the weapon, Arthur," Darian barked, his voice echoing off the flooded stone like a gunshot.

"Your flight is canceled."

Julian screamed, dropping his wrench and scrambling backward against the wet wall, raising his hands in sheer, unadulterated terror.

"Don't shoot! Please, Costa, don't shoot! It was all his idea! He planned the fire! He made me forge the documents!"

"Shut your mouth, you useless worm!" Arthur shrieked, his voice cracking as he struggled to stand, swinging the heavy revolver toward Darian.

Nadia stepped out from the shadows beside Darian, moving into the dim yellow glow of the kerosene lantern.

Arthur’s watery eyes locked onto her face, and the gun in his hand wavered, his withered frame shivering with sudden, uncontrollable palsy.

"You..." Arthur wheezed, his chest heaving with agonizing rattles.

"You look just like Nicholas."

"He stood right there... thirty-six months ago... looking down on me with that same self-righteous Sterling disgust."

"He wouldn't give me the docks, Nadia!"

"He said the Pendleton name was tainted by dirty money and street filth!"

"He thought he was better than me!"

"He was better than you, Arthur," Nadia said, her voice dropping into a flat, devastating calm as she stepped forward, ignoring Darian’s warning hand on her sleeve.

"He built these docks with honest sweat, and he treated every single worker who died here like a member of his own family."

"You murdered eighty men, and for what?"

"For two bags of gold and an empire you can't even carry into the grave?"

Arthur’s face contorted into a hideous, feral mask of pure hatred, and his thumb pulled the hammer of the revolver back with a loud, mechanical click.

"If I’m going to hell tonight, Nicholas Sterling’s brat is coming with me!" Arthur screamed, swinging the barrel straight toward Nadia’s heart.

Darian reacted with the terrifying speed of an apex predator.

He knocked Nadia sideways out of the line of fire with his left shoulder, raising his sidearm with his right hand in a single, fluid blur.

Three shots erupted from Darian’s weapon in deafening succession, the muzzle flashes blinding the narrow chamber with strobe-like bursts of light.

The first bullet shattered Arthur’s wrist, sending the chrome revolver flying into the black water of the canal with a dull splash.

The second and third rounds tore through Arthur's shoulder and chest, spinning the old patriarch backward off his crate.

Arthur slammed hard against the stone floor, his hands clawing at the damp concrete as bright arterial crimson blossomed across his white dress shirt.

Julian dropped to his knees, sobbing hysterically and pressing his forehead against the muddy floorboards.

"Mercy! Please, God, have mercy on me!" Julian wailed like a broken child.

Marco and the enforcers swept into the room, grabbing Julian by his coat collar and pinning his arms behind his back with heavy steel cuffs.

Darian lowered his weapon, stepping over to where Nadia had rolled against the wall.

He reached down, his strong hands catching her beneath her arms and lifting her effortlessly back onto her feet.

"You hit your head?" he asked, his voice thick with raw, undisguised panic as his eyes scanned her face for injuries.

"I’m fine," she whispered, her hands grasping his combat vest to steady herself.

She turned her head to look at Arthur Pendleton lying in the dirt, gasping his final, shallow breaths as his blood mingled with the brackish water of the harbor.

Nadia walked slowly over to the dying patriarch, stopping beside him as his dimming eyes looked up at her one last time.

"You took everything from us, Arthur," she said softly, watching the light slowly drain from his pupils.

"My home, my name, my brother’s health, and my father's life."

"And now you are dying on the very dirt you tried to steal."

Arthur’s fingers twitched once against the cold stone, a final rattle escaping his throat before his eyes glazed over into the hollow stare of death.

The monster who had ruled the city from the shadows for four decades was gone, extinguished in the filthy mud of the pier he had burned.

Nadia drew a long, shuddering breath of the freezing air, feeling the crushing weight of three agonizing years lift from her shoulders like smoke.

Sirens began to wail in the distance above, dozens of state police cruisers and federal emergency vehicles converging on the perimeter of Pier Fourteen.

General Thomas Vance’s tactical squad descended the stairs, their flashlights flooding the subterranean vault with blinding white beams.

Vance stopped at the entrance, surveying the body of Arthur Pendleton, the weeping Julian in handcuffs, and the two bags of gold sitting on the dock.

He looked at Darian Costa standing beside Nicholas Sterling’s daughter, their clothes covered in soot and stone dust, looking like sovereigns who had just reclaimed their kingdom.

Vance slowly lowered his badge, nodding with profound, professional respect toward Nadia.

"Miss Sterling," Vance announced, his voice echoing through the ruined hall.

"The municipal court has just executed the emergency injunction."
