Chapter 7 - The Waltz of Shadows

The brass orchestra struck up a sweeping, melancholic waltz, attempting to drown out the explosive confrontation at Table One.

High-society couples reluctantly moved toward the polished oak dance floor, casting nervous, terrified glances back toward the head table.

Arthur Pendleton leaned back, his eyes closed, clutching his chest as Julian frantically signaled for the private family physician waiting in the VIP lounge.

Darian rose from his seat, wiping the smear of blood from his cut palm with a white damask napkin.

He tossed the soiled cloth onto the broken glass and turned toward Nadia, offering his uninjured hand with an intense, unreadable stare.

"Dance with me," he commanded, though the rough edges of his voice held a strange, unexpected undercurrent of reverence.

Nadia hesitated for a fraction of a second, feeling the eyes of every billionaire in the state burning into her back.

She placed her calloused hand into his palm, feeling the heat of his skin and the rough scars etched into his knuckles.

Darian pulled her onto the parquet floor, wrapping his right arm firmly around the small of her bare back.

His grip was ironclad, pulling her body flush against his chest, eliminating every shred of distance between the plum silk and his black tuxedo.

Nadia lifted her chin, matching his stride as they spun into the center of the glittering room beneath the cascades of crystal light.

She had danced the waltz at debutante balls since she was twelve years old, and her movements were fluid, majestic, and completely natural.

Darian followed her lead with surprisingly smooth grace, his heavy frame moving with the quiet balance of a trained killer.

"You lied to me," Darian said, his lips hovering inches from her ear as they turned through the crowd.

"I didn't lie to you, Mr. Costa," she replied softly, keeping her eyes locked onto his sharp jaw.

"You asked for my name; I told you my name was Nadia."

"You didn't ask who my father was, and you certainly didn't care until you realized I could bleed your worst enemy dry."

"You let me treat you like a dog," Darian hissed, his fingers tightening against her bare skin, his breath warm against her temple.

"You let me throw cash at your feet while you cleaned my floors with a toothbrush."

"Why didn't you put a bullet in my head the first month you worked in my house?"

A slow, dangerous smile curved Nadia’s lips as they spun past the city police commissioner, who stepped back in sheer intimidation.

"Because you weren't the one who ordered the fire at Pier Fourteen, Darian," she whispered, her amber eyes blazing with calculating intellect.

"You were just an opportunistic hyena who moved into the territory after my father was buried."

"Arthur Pendleton was the man who struck the match."

"I needed a safe place to hide where Arthur's hitmen would never look for Nicholas Sterling’s daughter."

"Where better to hide than under the roof of the most paranoid, heavily guarded mobster in the city?"

Darian let out a low, stunned laugh, the dark humor rattling in his chest as he pulled her closer into the turn.

"You used my own fortress as a safehouse," he muttered, genuine admiration gleaming behind his cold eyes.

"You played me like a violin, Nadia."

"And now Arthur knows you're alive."

"He won't let you leave this mountain tonight; he’s already signaling his private security detail by the west exits."

Nadia glanced subtly toward the frosted glass doors flanking the ballroom gardens, noting four bulky men in black overcoats quietly clearing the corridor.

"I didn't come here expecting a peaceful retirement, Mr. Costa," she said, her heartbeat steady and calm against his chest.

"I came here to announce that the Sterling family is collecting its debts."

"Then let's make sure the bill is paid in full," Darian whispered, his voice darkening into pure, unbridled malice.

The waltz reached its crescendo, the violins soaring to a dramatic peak before settling into the final, resonant chord.

Darian dipped her low, his face inches from hers, their breaths mingling in the heavy, perfume-choked air of the ballroom.

For a single, breathless second, the entire high-society assembly held its breath, witnessing the terrifying union of the city's deadliest gangster and its rightful queen.

When he pulled her back upright, the applause was hesitant, scattered, and thick with terror.

Before the applause could fade, the grand chandeliers overhead flickered violently and died, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.
