Chapter 11 - Reunion in the Alps

The Sanitarium of Saint-Martin stood like a stone fortress against the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Swiss Alps, surrounded by dense pine forests and a thick blanket of morning mist.
The black Mercedes van supplied by Alessandro’s European contacts rolled smoothly through the iron security gates and came to a halt outside the heavy oak doors of the main administration building.
Sophie stepped out into the crisp mountain air, pulling her wool coat tightly around her shoulders. Her breath plumed in white clouds in the freezing altitude. Beside her, Alessandro walked with his hands in his coat pockets, calm and unreadable, flanked by two local security associates.
Inside, the sanitarium smelled of antiseptic, old paper, and pine disinfectant. A nervous-looking administrator scurried down the hallway, clutching a thick folder to his chest.
"Mr. Moretti," the administrator stammered in accented English, bowing slightly. "We were not expecting you until this afternoon. The paperwork from your legal team has been processed. Wing C, room 12."
"Lead the way," Alessandro commanded.
They followed the administrator down a long, sterile corridor lined with reinforced glass windows. As they reached room 12 at the end of the hall, Sophie’s heart began to hammer against her ribs with the force of a sledgehammer.
The administrator unlocked the heavy steel door and pushed it open.
The room was small, lit by a single window overlooking the snow-covered valley below. Sitting at a small wooden desk in the corner, bent over a book with graying hair and a thin, frail frame, was a man who looked decades older than his actual age.
"Papa?" Sophie whispered.
The man at the desk froze. Slowly, agonizingly, he turned his head.
Julian Dubois blinked against the light, staring at the doorway. His hollow eyes widened in utter disbelief as he saw Sophie standing there in the doorway, framed against the Alpine light.
"Sophie?" Julian gasped, his voice cracking like dry wood. He pushed himself up from the chair, stumbling forward. "My God... my little girl..."
Sophie broke past the administrator and ran across the room, throwing her arms around her father’s neck as he caught her in a desperate, sobbing embrace. The four years of hiding, running, starvation, and fear melted away in a single, shattering moment.
"You're safe," Sophie cried into his shoulder, tears streaming down her cheeks. "You're safe, Papa. We're going home."
Julian pulled back, holding her face in his trembling hands, tears cutting tracks through the wrinkles on his cheeks. Then, over her shoulder, his eyes caught sight of Alessandro Moretti standing quietly in the doorway.
Julian’s breath caught. He stepped protectively in front of Sophie, his eyes wide with terror. "You... you're a Moretti. Did you come to finish what Victor started?"
"If I wanted you dead, Julian, you would have stayed dead in Marseille four years ago," Alessandro said calmly, stepping two paces into the room. He reached into his coat pocket and tossed a set of international passport documents onto the small wooden desk. "Your debts are canceled. Your name has been cleared through the federal courts using your brother’s own ledger. And your daughter spent the last forty-eight hours helping me dismantle the man who put you here."

Julian stared from Alessandro to Sophie, who was nodding through her tears, grasping her father’s frail arm.
"It's true, Papa," Sophie whispered, a radiant smile breaking through her tears as she held up her left hand, letting the magnificent diamond ring catch the light of the Alpine sun. "We're going home."
