Chapter 12 - The Skyline of New York

Two weeks later, the rain in Manhattan was gone, replaced by a crisp, brilliant autumn evening that set the city’s glass and steel skyscrapers ablaze with gold and amber light.
Inside the private penthouse suite of the Moretti Tower overlooking Central Park, the atmosphere was a far cry from the cramped, freezing apartment in Astoria.
Sophie stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a crystal glass of water, looking down at the endless river of yellow cabs and glowing taillights far below. Her father was resting comfortably in the master suite down the hall, receiving the best medical care money could buy, his health returning day by day.
Behind her, the soft click of the penthouse door echoed across the hardwood floor. Footsteps approached quietly, and then strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a warm, solid chest.
"You're quiet tonight," Alessandro murmured, resting his chin gently on her shoulder, his breath warm against her neck.
"I was just thinking about the night we met," Sophie said softly, leaning back into his embrace, her fingers resting over his hands. "At L’Étoile Noir. When Camilla laughed at me and said I couldn't read the menu."
Alessandro chuckled, a low, rumbling sound in his chest. "If she hadn't been so arrogant, we might never have crossed paths. I suppose I owe her a note of gratitude."
"Don't push your luck," Sophie teased, turning around in his arms to face him. She looked up into his dark, intelligent eyes, tracing the sharp line of his jaw. "You didn't just bring me into your world because of the ledger, did you?"
Alessandro smiled—a genuine, unguarded smile that transformed his ruthless demeanor into something warm and human. He reached up, gently tucking a stray lock of honey-blonde hair behind her ear, repeating the exact gesture from the restaurant two weeks ago.

"The moment you corrected my wine choice and looked me in the eye without a shred of fear," Alessandro whispered, his voice dropping into a rich, gravelly cadence, "I knew you were the only person in New York strong enough to rule this skyline by my side."
Sophie slid her arms around his neck, pulling him down into a slow, deliberate kiss as the Manhattan skyline glittered outside their window like a kingdom earned, secured, and held forever.
