Chapter 5 - The Offer from the Shadow

The silence in the cramped apartment stretched for several long seconds, broken only by the steady drip of a leaky faucet in the tiny kitchenette.

Sophie stayed frozen beneath Alessandro’s hand, her breath catching in her throat. She had expected a bullet, a betrayal, or a lifetime locked in a cellar. She had not expected a reward.

"What does that mean?" Sophie asked, her voice barely a rasp. "What do you want from me?"

Alessandro withdrew his hand slowly, standing back up to his full height. He looked around the squalid room one more time before fixing his gaze back on her.

"My uncle Victor is hosting a private dinner tomorrow night at his estate in Oyster Bay," Alessandro said, his tone crisp and authoritative. "A gathering of the capos. He believes he has successfully marginalized me, and he is planning a vote of no confidence to strip me of my title."

Sophie slowly climbed to her feet, wiping her hands on her apron. "What does that have to do with me? I'm a waitress."

"Tomorrow night, my uncle will be surrounded by his most trusted lieutenants—men who are fluent in high society, European finance, and international wine culture, none of which Victor understands himself," Alessandro explained, pacing slowly across the warped floorboards. "He is bringing in a French wine broker from Paris to audit his offshore accounts during the dinner. A man named Marcel Laurent."

Sophie’s eyes narrowed instantly as a cold realization hit her. "Monsieur Laurent? The maître d' at L’Étoile Noir?"

"The very same," Alessandro confirmed, a dark smile playing on his lips. "Laurent is my uncle's primary money launderer in the hospitality sector. He runs the restaurant as a front, and tomorrow night, he is flying to Oyster Bay to deliver the quarterly transfer codes disguised as a wine inventory."

"And you want me to go in his place," Sophie stated, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity. "You want me to take his identity—or intercept him."

"I want you to walk into that mansion on my arm," Alessandro corrected sharply. "Not as a waitress. As my fiancée."

Sophie staggered back a step, colliding against her stack of textbooks. "Your what? Are you insane? Your uncle and his men would tear me apart in two minutes! They know every face in the New York underworld!"

"They don't know you," Alessandro countered, stepping closer until she could feel the heat radiating from his suit jacket. "You have been invisible for four years. To them, you are a ghost. Furthermore, you speak flawless Parisian French, you know wine better than Laurent does, and you have my father’s ledger sitting in this pocket as proof of their treason."

"I won't do it," Sophie said, shaking her head vehemently. "It's suicide. If I make one wrong move, your uncle will figure out who I am, and he'll kill me just like he probably killed my father!"

Alessandro stopped inches away from her. He reached out and caught her wrist—not with violence, but with an immovable, iron grip that brooked no argument.

"Your father isn't dead, Sophie," Alessandro said quietly.

Sophie stopped breathing. The room seemed to spin off its axis. "What did you say?"

"Your father isn't dead," Alessandro repeated, his voice steady and low. "He faked his death four years ago when my uncle’s men caught up to him in Marseille. He has been locked away in a private sanitarium in Switzerland, funded by my uncle as collateral to ensure your silence. If you help me take down Victor tomorrow night, I will fly to Zurich myself next week, break your father out, and bring him back to you."

Sophie stared at Alessandro, searching his dark, unblinking eyes for any sign of a lie. She found none—only cold, absolute certainty.

"If you're lying to me," Sophie whispered, a fierce, desperate fire igniting in her chest, "I will take this ledger to the FBI myself."

"Deal," Alessandro said, releasing her wrist. He turned toward the door. "Viktor will pick you up at noon tomorrow. Wear something expensive. I'll have a stylist deliver it to the restaurant before morning."
