Chapter 6 - The Transformation

The knock on the basement door of L’Étoile Noir came at 10:00 a.m. sharp the next morning.

Sophie, bleary-eyed and having barely slept an hour, unlatched the heavy wooden bolt. Standing in the alleyway was a sleek, middle-aged woman in a charcoal pantsuit carrying three large garment bags and a leather vanity case, flanked by two of Alessandro’s stone-faced guards.

"Are you Sophie?" the woman asked briskly, pushing past her into the cramped prep kitchen. "Good. We have forty-five minutes before Mr. Moretti’s car arrives. Sit down in that chair."

For the next two hours, Sophie was subjected to a whirlwind of professional styling. Her honey-blonde hair, usually tied back in a messy bun, was washed, treated, and styled into an elegant, cascading French twist that exposed the delicate curve of her neck. Her skin, pale from weeks of fluorescent restaurant lighting, was treated with moisturizers and subtle cosmetics that turned her tired features into something striking and aristocratic.

When the garment bag was unzipped, Sophie caught her breath.

It was a custom-tailored Yves Saint Laurent evening gown in deep midnight silk, hugging her waist before pooling in a subtle, elegant train at the floor. Paired with diamond-stud earrings that looked suspiciously real and a pair of black velvet Christian Louboutin heels, Sophie looked less like a runaway debtor and more like European royalty.

"Perfection," the stylist murmured, packing up her brushes. "Mr. Moretti has excellent taste."

At precisely 12:15 p.m., Viktor escorted her out the back door and into the back of a waiting black SUV. Alessandro was already inside, working on a tablet connected to a secure satellite uplink.

He did not look up immediately when she slid onto the leather seat beside him. He finished typing a sentence, pressed send, and then slowly turned his head.

His dark eyes swept over her from head to toe, lingering on the silk neckline and the diamond studs. For a fraction of a second, the mask of the ruthless don slipped, revealing a flicker of raw, undeniable appreciation.

"The dress fits," Alessandro noted, his voice smooth.

"It feels like armor," Sophie replied, her voice steady, though her hands were clenched tightly in her lap. "I hope it’s thick enough."

"It is," Alessandro said, closing his tablet and sliding it into his briefcase. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, clicking it open to reveal a magnificent ring—a four-carat emerald-cut diamond set in platinum, surrounded by smaller pavé stones.

Sophie recoiled slightly. "What is that?"

"Our engagement ring," Alessandro said simply. "If we are walking into my uncle's stronghold as a unified front, we need a story that no one will question. My men leaked word of our engagement to the gossip columns an hour ago. By the time we arrive in Oyster Bay tonight, every capo in the syndicate will know that Alessandro Moretti is bringing his future wife—a woman of impeccable French breeding—to the summit."

"You arranged a fake engagement announcement in the press?" Sophie asked, staring at him in disbelief. "Without asking me?"

"In my world, you don't ask permission to survive," Alessandro replied, taking her left hand before she could pull away. He slid the heavy diamond ring onto her ring finger. It fit with terrifying perfection. "Keep your hands steady tonight, Sophie. My uncle is a predator who smells weakness. If he sees you flinch, he will destroy us both."

Sophie looked down at the blinding sparkle of the diamond on her hand, then up into Alessandro’s dark, unyielding eyes. There was no turning back now. The trap was set, and they were walking right into the jaws of the beast.
