Chapter 9 - The Collapse of the Old Guard

The room erupted into chaos.

Salvatore lunged out of his seat, his hand diving beneath his jacket toward a shoulder holster, his face contorted in panic. "Kill him! Take the book!"

Before Salvatore’s fingers could even wrap around the grip of his weapon, Viktor and two of Alessandro’s bodyguards moved with terrifying, practiced speed. Viktor vaulted over the back of an empty chair, slammed Salvatore face-first down onto the mahogany table, and drove his knee into the man's spine with a sickening thud.

A second bodyguard drew a suppressed pistol and leveled it squarely at the head of the remaining capo, who froze instantly with his hands flat on the table, breathing heavily.

Laurent slumped back into his chair, covering his face with his trembling hands, weeping softly.

Victor Moretti did not move. He sat at the head of the table, staring at the leather ledger resting beside his water glass, his chest heaving under his tailored suit. He looked older now—defeated, cornered, and entirely stripped of his illusion of invincibility.

"You planned this from the beginning," Victor whispered, his voice cracking with bitter hatred. "You used the girl to find the book. You used my own paranoia against me."

"I didn't use her, Uncle," Alessandro said quietly, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. "I merely gave her an opportunity to reclaim what your greed stole from her family four years ago."

Sophie sat silently beside Alessandro, her hands folded gracefully in her lap. The terror that had gripped her in the Manhattan bistro was gone, replaced by a cold, steady tide of vindication. She looked across the table at the man who had ordered her father’s disappearance and the seizure of their livelihood.

"My father is in Switzerland," Sophie said, her voice cutting through the heavy silence of the dining hall like a blade. "Where is he?"

Victor laughed—a harsh, dry, rasping sound. "You think I'm going to tell you where Julian is? Go ahead, nephew. Kill me. Take the family. But you'll never find the sanitarium without my cipher."

Alessandro didn't flinch. He slowly pulled a small, encrypted burner phone from his pocket, tapped the screen twice, and slid it across the table toward Victor.

"My men locked down your primary accounts in Zurich twenty minutes ago," Alessandro said, his tone casual, almost conversational. "Your private jets have been grounded by the FAA. Your Swiss bank accounts have been frozen under federal anti-money laundering statutes triggered by the documents in this ledger. You don't have a cipher anymore, Uncle. You have nothing."

Victor stared at the phone screen. The display showed a red balance screen: ACCOUNT FROZEN. ASSETS SEIZED.

The older man slumped back in his chair, the last remnants of his strength evaporating. He looked at Alessandro with a mixture of hatred and grudging respect.

"Third floor. Sanitarium of Saint-Martin, outside Geneva," Victor muttered, his voice dropping to a defeated whisper. "The wing for political detainees. He's registered under an assumed name."

Alessandro nodded once, slipping the phone back into his pocket. He stood up from the table, offering his arm to Sophie.

"Come, Sophie," Alessandro said softly. "Our work here is finished."
