Chapter 4 - The Ledger in the Floorboards

The rain had turned into a steady, gray drizzle by the time Alessandro’s black Mercedes-Maybach pulled up outside a decaying brick apartment building in Astoria, Queens.

Sophie sat in the passenger seat, staring straight ahead through the rain-streaked windshield. Her hands were clamped tightly together in her lap, knuckles white. Viktor sat in the front passenger seat, silent as a statue, while a driver named Frankie idled the engine.

In the back seat beside Sophie sat Alessandro. He had dismissed Camilla twenty minutes earlier, packing her into a cab with a curt text message and a platinum parting gift that ensured she would ask no questions.

"This is it," Sophie whispered, her voice trembling as she pointed toward the peeling paint and flickering neon sign of the bodega downstairs. "Number 4B. Fourth floor. No elevator."

"Lead the way," Alessandro said, opening his own door.

Viktor moved instantly, stepping out into the rain with a black umbrella held over Alessandro’s head. Sophie pushed her door open and stepped into the puddle, the cold water immediately soaking through her scuffed flats.

They climbed the narrow, urine-scented stairwell in absolute silence. The only sound was the heavy, rhythmic thud of their boots on the warped linoleum steps. When they reached room 4B, Sophie fumbled in her coat pocket, retrieved a brass key with a chipped red rubber grip, and turned the lock.

The apartment was tiny. A single room containing a sagging mattress on the floor, a hot plate, a metal folding table covered in stacked textbooks, and a single flickering overhead bulb.

"Not exactly the Hôtel de Crillon," Alessandro remarked dryly, stepping inside and looking around with an air of detached curiosity. He noticed the lack of heating, the single heavy woolen blanket folded neatly on the bed, and the open box of saltines on the counter. "You live like a refugee."

"I live the way people live when they're running for their lives," Sophie shot back, her defensive pride finally flaring up through her fear. She walked over to the corner of the room where a warped section of linoleum flooring met the baseboard. "You want the ledger? It's here. My father gave it to me the night he disappeared. He told me if I was ever cornered by the Morettis, I should use it as a shield. Or a weapon."

Alessandro’s eyes locked onto the floorboards. "Open it."

Sophie dropped to her knees, using a rusted butter knife to pry up the nailed corner of the linoleum. Beneath it lay a hollowed-out cavity in the subfloor, lined with oilskin cloth. She reached inside and pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger with water-stained pages and handwritten cryptographic entries on every line.

She stood up, holding it out toward Alessandro like an offering to a executioner.

Alessandro did not take it immediately. He stepped closer, looking down at the worn leather cover, tracing the embossed initials J.D. with his thumb.

"Do you know what is inside this book, Sophie?" Alessandro asked softly.

"Names," she said, her voice shaking. "Bank accounts in Zurich, Cayman shell companies, payoff schedules for half the police precinct in Manhattan, and signatures belonging to your uncle Victor Moretti."

"My uncle Victor has been trying to usurp my position as head of the family for three years," Alessandro said, his tone turning ice-cold. "He thinks I am too young, too modern, too detached from the old ways. If this ledger goes public, his entire faction—the old guard who control the docks and the construction unions—will be indicted by morning. But if I hold this ledger..."

"Then you control him entirely," Sophie finished for him.

"Precisely." Alessandro finally reached out and took the book from her hands. He slid it inside the inner pocket of his bespoke jacket. He looked down at Sophie, who was still kneeling on the dusty floorboards, her face pale, waiting for the axe to fall.

"Please," Sophie whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Don't kill me. I gave you what you wanted. I didn't even know what was in it until a year ago. Just... let me go."

May you like

Alessandro reached down, placed a large, warm hand under her chin, and forced her to look up into his dark eyes.

"Kill you?" Alessandro murmured, a faint, dangerous shadow of a smile touching the corner of his lips. "Sophie... I don't kill people who give me the keys to the kingdom. I reward them."
