Chapter 11 - The Desperate Conspirators

The basement apartment in South Boston smelled of damp plaster, stale grease, and cheap gin.
Rain slashed against the narrow street-level window, splashing murky water against the cracked glass.
Ethan Calloway sat on a peeling vinyl sofa, staring at an empty bottle of bourbon on the floor.
His designer linen shirt from the island was now filthy, the collar frayed and grey around the edges.
He had thirty-four dollars left in his personal checking account.
His country club membership had been revoked by executive decree on Tuesday morning.
His mother, Victoria, had changed the security codes to the Chestnut Hill estate and refused to answer his phone calls.
Across the room, Vanessa Reed paced back and forth across the threadbare rug.
She wore an oversized thrift-store sweater and oversized sunglasses to hide the dark circles under her eyes.
Her luxury car had been repossessed by the leasing agency forty-eight hours ago.
Her face was still plastered across digital tabloid forums as the fallen corporate mistress who brought down an empire.
“We cannot live like this, Ethan,” Vanessa hissed, stopping in front of the sofa and shaking with anxiety.
“I called five PR firms in New York today.”
“The moment they hear my name, they hang up the phone!”
“My professional reputation is completely dead!”
Ethan let out a bitter, raspy chuckle, rubbing his stubbled chin with dirty fingers.
“Your reputation?” Ethan sneered without looking up.
“I built that company for six years, Vanessa.”
“And Grace gave it to Declan Pierce like it was a tip to a cab driver.”
“The Wall Street Journal ran a front-page profile on her this morning calling her ‘The Iron Heiress of New England.’”
“She is giving a keynote address at the Boston Harbor Hotel next Friday,” Vanessa said, her eyes narrowing into slits.
Ethan looked up slowly, his bloodshot eyes locking onto hers.
“What did you say?” Ethan asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
“The New England Logistics Gala,” Vanessa said, pulling up a saved screenshot on a cheap burner phone.
“She is attending as the keynote guest of honor alongside Declan Pierce.”
“She will be eight months pregnant.”
“Her private security detail will be focused on crowd control outside the main ballroom.”
Ethan stood up from the sofa, his fingers clenching into tight, white-knuckled fists.
“She thinks she has erased me,” Ethan muttered, pacing across the small room like a caged beast.
“She thinks Declan Pierce’s money makes her untouchable.”
“She is carrying my child.”
“A court will not grant me an injunction, but public leverage is a different game entirely.”
“What are you thinking, Ethan?” Vanessa whispered, a dark, desperate greed reigniting in her gaze.
“Grace cares about two things in this world,” Ethan said, pointing a trembling finger at the wall.
“Her family’s pristine reputation and that unborn baby.”
“If we confront her privately before the gala, she will pay any price to keep the cameras away.”
“We don’t need the board of directors.”
“We need ten million dollars in bearer bonds deposited into a Swiss vault.”
“And if she refuses?” Vanessa asked, her voice shaking with fear and excitement.

“She won’t refuse,” Ethan snarled, his eyes hollow with manic obsession.
“Because if she refuses, I will ensure that gala ends with her being carried out in an ambulance.”
