Chapter 6 - The Midnight Eviction

Ethan Calloway’s signature on the final page was jagged and barely legible.
The heavy black ink bled into the white fibers of the legal paper.
With that single signature, he surrendered his title, his executive authority, and thirty-six percent of his controlling shares.
Marcus Vance immediately reached forward and gathered the four signed copies.
Each copy was stamped with an embossed red notary seal that echoed like a small hammer through the silent penthouse.
“The transition instruments are legally binding as of seven o’clock tomorrow morning,” Marcus Vance announced formally.
“Until that hour, Mr. Calloway retains nominal presence on the corporate registry only.”
Ethan sat motionless in his chair, his hands resting limp upon his knees.
His breathing was shallow, his eyes dull with shock.
Declan Pierce pocketed his phone and turned toward the head of the table.
“Grace,” Declan said quietly, his voice cutting through the heavy room.
“Your transport back to Boston is scheduled for seven-thirty tomorrow morning.”
“Dr. Katherine Adams will be waiting at Massachusetts General to complete your scheduled prenatal monitoring.”
Grace looked up and offered Declan a faint, genuine nod of gratitude.
“Thank you, Declan,” Grace replied softly.
“My physician’s instructions were very clear about limiting my travel duration.”
Ethan’s head jerked upward at the sound of the doctor’s name.
“You flew Dr. Adams here?” Ethan asked hoarsely.
“The chief of maternal-fetal medicine at Mass General?”
“Dr. Adams has been overseeing Grace’s high-risk care for six months,” Declan answered, his eyes cold as ice.
“Unlike you, Grace prioritizes the health of her child over luxury distractions.”
Vanessa was still on her knees by the mahogany entrance door, shivering beneath her rumpled red dress.
Her eye makeup had run down her cheeks in dark, humiliating streaks.
“Ethan... what about me?” Vanessa whimpered, her voice raspy from tears.
“You signed your shares away... what happens to my severance?”
“What happens to my apartment in Back Bay?”
Ethan slowly stood up from the leather conference chair.
His face was twisted in disgust as he glared down at his former mistress.
“Do not speak to me, Vanessa,” Ethan spat with bitter venom.
“You are the reason my life is destroyed.”
“If you hadn’t sent that postcard from Cabo to your friends in marketing, none of their forensic auditors would have checked the flight manifests!”
“Me?” Vanessa cried out, scrambling to her feet in disbelief.
“You are blaming me?”
“You begged me to be your vice president!”
“You told me Grace was a sheltered heiress who couldn't balance a checkbook!”
“Enough,” Grace interrupted, her voice neither loud nor angry, yet instantly commanding.
Both Ethan and Vanessa fell silent, turning their eyes toward the pregnant woman.
Grace stood slowly, adjusting her cream cashmere coat over her green gown.
“You are both staying at Villa Fourteen on the southern peninsula of this resort,” Grace noted calmly.
“The master reservation was made under corporate account four-eight-two.”
Grace looked at the junior attorney seated at the end of the table.
“Has the resort general manager processed the billing transfer?”
“Yes, Mrs. Calloway,” the attorney answered promptly.
“The corporate expense line has been frozen across all resort services.”
“All outstanding room charges, dining tabs, and incidentals will transfer immediately to Mr. Ethan Calloway’s personal card.”
Ethan flinched as if struck.
“My personal card?” Ethan gasped.
“The villa rate is fourteen thousand dollars a night!”
“And you have four days of outstanding private dining invoices,” Grace said smoothly.
“Including the vintage nineteen-ninety Krug champagne you ordered to the beach gazebo yesterday evening.”
Grace walked toward the suite’s private double doors.
The security guard pulled both doors open with deferential precision.
Grace stopped on the threshold and turned back to look at the broken couple.
“Check-out time for Villa Fourteen is eleven o’clock tomorrow morning,” Grace said.
“Resort security will assist you with your luggage if your private bill is settled in full.”
“Grace, please, don’t leave like this,” Ethan begged, stepping toward her with an outstretched hand.
“We were married for six years!”
“We built a life together!”
Declan Pierce stepped directly between Ethan and Grace, his broad frame completely blocking Ethan’s path.
“Do not take another step toward her, Calloway,” Declan warned, his baritone voice dark and absolute.
“From this second forward, any communication from you must pass through Vance & Sterling LLP.”
“If you approach Grace directly, a restraining order will be filed in Suffolk Superior Court within two hours.”
Declan turned and offered his arm to Grace.
Grace placed her gloved hand lightly upon Declan’s forearm.
Together, they walked into the elevator vestibule.
The elevator doors slid shut, leaving Ethan and Vanessa alone in the expansive silence of the penthouse corridor.
Ethan turned to look at Vanessa, his jaw clenching with violent fury.
Vanessa wiped her face with the back of her trembling hand, backing away down the hall.
“Don’t touch me, Ethan,” Vanessa whispered, her voice filled with pure dread.

“We are ruined.”
“Both of us.”
