Chapter 12 - The Shadow of the Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Boston Harbor Hotel glowed beneath three tiers of Austrian crystal chandeliers.
Over five hundred titans of industry, federal regulators, and state politicians filled the room.
Waiters in black silk waistcoats moved smoothly between banquet tables carrying flutes of vintage champagne.
At the head table, Grace Sterling sat radiant in a midnight-blue velvet gown with long, tailored sleeves.
A delicate diamond necklace, an heirloom from her grandmother, rested against her collarbone.
Her pregnancy was now prominently rounded, yet her posture radiated grace, calm authority, and supreme poise.
Beside her sat Declan Pierce.
His tailored tuxedo fit him with razor-sharp precision.
He barely touched his dinner, his watchful eyes constantly scanning the entrances and private service corridors.
Three private security operatives in plain clothes stood stationed within ten feet of Grace’s chair.
“You look remarkable tonight, Grace,” Declan murmured softly, leaning close enough for only her to hear.
Grace turned to him, a faint, genuine smile softening her lips.
“Thank you, Declan,” Grace whispered.
“The baby has been unusually active tonight.”
“I think he enjoys the sound of the cello quartet.”
“Or he already knows how to command a room,” Declan replied with a subtle, protective smile.
The master of ceremonies stepped to the podium, tapping the microphone to quiet the murmuring crowd.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the host announced, “please welcome our keynote speaker for this evening,”
“The Executive Chairwoman and CEO of Sterling International, Mrs. Grace Sterling!”
The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
Grace stood slowly, accepting Declan’s supportive hand as she stepped onto the raised platform.
She delivered her fifteen-minute address on sustainable maritime supply chains with utter clarity and command.
She did not stumble over a single syllable.
She did not speak like a victim of a public scandal.
She spoke as the undisputed architect of New England’s logistics future.
When she finished, the applause lasted for three uninterrupted minutes.
As she stepped down from the stage, Dr. Adams approached her from the side corridor with a glass of water.
“Your vitals looked exceptional during the speech, Grace,” Dr. Adams said with an approving nod.
“However, your blood pressure has crept up slightly over the last hour.”
“I want you off your feet and resting in the private hospitality suite upstairs within fifteen minutes.”
“Understood, Doctor,” Grace agreed, taking a gentle sip from the glass.
Declan walked over, offering his arm once again.
“I will escort you to the suite,” Declan said firmly.
“Marcus Vance has the courier files ready for your signature before we depart for the residence.”
Grace placed her hand on Declan’s arm, and together they moved toward the VIP service elevators behind the stage.
Neither of them noticed the figure standing in the shadows of the banquet kitchen entrance.
Dressed in the black uniform of an agency banquet server, Vanessa Reed watched them disappear into the elevator.
Vanessa pressed a small earpiece hidden beneath her hair.
“They are taking the private VIP elevator to Suite Fourteen,” Vanessa whispered into the microphone.
“She is alone with Pierce and two guards.”
In the underground parking garage three floors below, Ethan sat inside an unplated grey van, gripping the steering wheel.

“Cut the secondary elevator power circuit now,” Ethan ordered through his phone.
“I am coming up the service stairs.”
