Chapter 5 - The Fall of Vanessa Reed

The silence in the penthouse was thick and absolute, broken only by the muffled sobs coming from the corner.
Vanessa Reed slid down the wall until her knees hit the polished marble floor.
Her designer red dress was crumpled, her face streaked with mascara.
“Please, Grace,” Vanessa wept, looking up toward the pregnant woman.
“Please don’t destroy my life. Ethan told me your marriage was over. He told me you were separated!”
Grace turned her head slowly, looking down at Vanessa with an expression of pure, unadulterated pity.
“Miss Reed,” Grace said, her tone smooth and completely steady.
“You possess a master’s degree in strategic communications from Northwestern.”
“You were smart enough to falsify four corporate vendor contracts to hide the lease on your apartment.”
“Do not insult my intelligence now by pretending to be an innocent victim.”
Grace walked slowly over to the mahogany console table and picked up a manila folder.
She tossed it onto the carpet at Vanessa’s feet.
The folder fell open, spilling out photocopies of internal company emails and bank authorizations.
“Effective fifteen minutes ago, the board of directors terminated your employment for gross moral turpitude and breach of fiduciary duty,” Grace stated.
“Your corporate credit cards have been canceled.”
“The keycard to your office at Calloway Tower has been revoked.”
“And the security team at your Beacon Hill building has already placed your personal belongings in storage.”
Vanessa shook her head frantically, clutching at the carpet.
“You can’t evict me! The lease is under my company name!”
“The lease is under VR Creative Holdings,” Declan Pierce interjected, not even bothering to look down at her.
“An entity financed exclusively through stolen Calloway-Sterling treasury funds.”
“Pierce Global bought the debt of the property holding firm this afternoon.”
“The locks were changed at five o’clock.”
Vanessa turned to Ethan, crawling across the floor and clutching at the knee of his trousers.
“Ethan! Say something!” Vanessa screamed, shaking his leg.
“You promised me! You said if anything happened, you had offshore trusts set up for both of us!”
“Tell them! Tell them you won’t let them do this to me!”
Ethan pulled his leg away violently, disgust and hatred flashing in his eyes.
“Get away from me, Vanessa,” Ethan spat, his voice trembling with bitter resentment.
“If you hadn’t insisted on coming to this damn island, none of this would have happened!”
Vanessa gasped, staring at Ethan as if she were seeing a monster for the first time.
“I insisted?” Vanessa shrieked.
“You begged me to come! You booked the villa! You promised me we would be married by the time Grace delivered!”
Grace watched the spectacle unfold before her without an ounce of triumph.
There was no joy in witnessing the total moral decay of the man she had loved for six years.
There was only the cold, hard satisfaction of justice executed with surgical precision.
Grace turned back to the conference table and faced Marcus Vance.
“Slide the termination and asset surrender forms to Mr. Calloway,” Grace instructed.
Marcus pushed the thick stack of papers across the table, along with a heavy black signing pen.
Ethan looked down at the pen.
His hand trembled so violently he could barely hold his fingers still.
“Grace,” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking, looking up with tears finally shining in his bloodshot eyes.
“Think about our baby. Think about our son.”
“He needs a father. He needs our family intact.”
“I will go to counseling. I will sign whatever postnuptial agreement you want.”
“I will step down as CEO for a year and let you run everything.”
“Just don’t divorce me. Don’t take my name off the company my father started.”
Grace looked down at him, her hand resting warmly over her child.
“You stopped being a father the night you left your sick wife alone in a hospital bed to sleep with an employee,” Grace said, her voice softer now, yet carrying the weight of a granite tombstone.
“My son will have an honorable name.”
“He will carry the name Sterling.”
“And he will never, for one single day of his life, believe that a man is allowed to treat a woman the way you treated me.”
Grace pointed toward the bottom of the page.
“Sign the papers, Ethan.”
“Or Declan makes the phone call to the federal prosecutor.”
Declan Pierce slowly took his encrypted smartphone out of his pocket and tapped the screen twice, holding it in his open palm.
Ethan stared at the glowing phone screen.
He looked at Declan’s impassive face.
He looked at Marcus Vance’s ready witness stamp.

He looked at Vanessa sobbing uncontrollably on the floor.
And finally, he looked at Grace—his wife, the heiress he thought he could manage, the woman who had just dismantled his entire universe in less than forty minutes.
