Chapter 3 - The Confrontation Behind Locked Doors

Ethan pounded his fist against the heavy mahogany double doors of Penthouse Suite A.

His designer linen shirt was damp with cold sweat at the collar.

Behind him, Vanessa stood against the wood-paneled wall, biting her manicured thumbnail until the polish cracked.

“Ethan, we should leave,” Vanessa whispered, her eyes darting nervously toward the hallway security cameras.

“If the board finds out I am here with you, they will revoke my severance package before noon tomorrow.”

“Shut up, Vanessa!” Ethan snarled, turning on her with bared teeth.

“Grace doesn’t have the guts to do anything without my permission!”

“Everything she owns exists because my logistics team saved her grandfather’s dying company!”

“Do you really think she can walk into a room with Declan Pierce and make decisions about my empire?”

The double doors clicked open with a quiet mechanical hum.

A towering security officer in a dark suit stepped back, extending an open hand toward the interior.

“Mr. Calloway, Miss Reed, you may enter,” the officer said with flat professional detachment.

Ethan pushed past the guard into the suite, his jaw set in pure rage.

“Grace, what is the meaning of this circus?” Ethan roared as he crossed the marble entryway into the grand salon.

The sight before him stopped the words dead in his throat.

The room was not a private lovers’ hideaway.

It was an active, high-level corporate war room.

Six senior corporate attorneys from Vance & Sterling LLP sat along the conference table with open legal briefs.

Two forensic accountants sat behind encrypted screens displaying Calloway Industries’ offshore wire ledgers.

Declan Pierce stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, holding a crystal tumbler of sparkling water.

And seated at the head of the long table was Grace.

She looked radiant, composed, and utterly detached from the fury vibrating through Ethan’s veins.

On the table in front of her rested two thick stacks of freshly stamped, signed documents.

“Sit down, Ethan,” Grace said, her voice quiet but ringing through the silent room like a crystal bell.

“And Miss Reed, you might want to find a chair as well.”

“Your presence is directly relevant to Exhibit C.”

Vanessa turned ash white and instinctively stepped backward toward the door.

The security guard quietly closed the double doors and stood directly in front of the exit.

Ethan forced a harsh, dismissive laugh, stepping closer to the conference table.

“What kind of cheap theater is this, Grace?” Ethan demanded, slamming his palm onto the polished wood.

“You disappear from Boston, you fly to an offshore island while carrying my heir, and you hold meetings with my competitor?”

“Have you lost your mind?”

Declan did not turn around from the window.

“Mind your volume, Calloway,” Declan said without looking back.

“You are addressing the majority owner of Sterling Logistics and the mother of your future child.”

Ethan rounded on Declan, his finger pointing aggressively.

“This company is named Calloway Industries!” Ethan shouted.

“I am the Chief Executive Officer!”

“You have no standing in this room, Pierce!”

“Get out before I have resort security drag you into the street!”

Declan turned slowly, taking a measured sip from his glass.

A cold, patronizing smile touched the billionaire’s lips.

“You really don’t read your quarterly proxy filings, do you, Ethan?” Declan said softly.

Grace reached down and slid the top legal file across the table toward Ethan.

It came to a rest directly against his hand.

Ethan looked down.

Stamped in red ink across the front was a formal resolution: Calloway-Sterling Executive Board Emergency Censure & Removal Petition.

“What is this garbage?” Ethan demanded, refusing to open the cover.

“That is the formal invocation of the morality covenant signed during our merger five years ago,” Grace explained calmly.

“The covenant you drafted yourself to ensure neither of us could embarrass the family name in public.”

Grace leaned back slightly in her leather armchair, her hands folding over her baby bump.

“For the past fourteen months, Ethan, you have diverted three point eight million dollars from operating capital into offshore accounts.”

“Accounts registered under the shell entity ‘VR Creative Holdings’ in the Cayman Islands.”

Ethan froze.

His fingers twitched against the edge of the conference table.

Beside him, Vanessa let out a sharp, audible gasp, clutching her throat.

“VR Creative Holdings,” Grace repeated, her clear blue eyes locking onto Vanessa with razor sharpness.

“Vanessa Reed Creative Holdings.”

“Used to lease a three-bedroom penthouse in Back Bay Boston.”

“Used to purchase seven luxury European vacations under the guise of ‘European Brand Expansion.’”

“And used to cover two hundred and forty thousand dollars in private jewelry invoices from Harry Winston.”

Grace opened the second folder on the table.

Inside were high-resolution photographs, airline manifests, and wire transfer slips signed with Ethan’s digital corporate key.

“You stole from your own company to fund your assistant’s wardrobe,” Grace said, her tone devoid of emotion.

“Grace... Grace, wait, that was legitimate consulting—” Vanessa stammered, stepping forward with her hands up.

“Silence,” Marcus Vance barked from across the table, his legal voice cutting through Vanessa’s excuses like a scalpel.

“Miss Reed, you are currently an unindicted co-conspirator in a corporate embezzlement filing.”

“If you utter another word without independent legal counsel, we will have the federal marshals waiting at Logan Airport when you land.”

Vanessa shrank back against the wall, tears finally spilling down her cheeks in absolute terror.

Ethan stared at the papers, his mind racing to find an exit, a loophole, an excuse.

“This is private property,” Ethan whispered hoarsely, looking at Grace.

“You can’t just remove me. The board will never ratify this.”

“My allies control the proxy committee!”

Declan Pierce set his glass down on the side table with a soft, final clink.

“Your allies sold their voting rights three hours ago, Ethan,” Declan said smoothly.

“To me.”
