Chapter 11 - The Cleared Name of Anthony Rossi

Twenty-four hours later, the storm had finally abandoned Chicago, leaving the autumn sky clean, crisp, and brilliant blue.

Inside Pediatric Intensive Care Room Four, the morning sunlight poured through the large double windows, warming the foot of Marco’s bed.

The nine-year-old boy was sitting upright against three plush pillows, eating a bowl of warm oatmeal without coughing once.

The terrifying tangle of intravenous lines and monitors had been removed, replaced by a simple pulse band around his wrist.

Bella sat beside him, peeling an orange with a small plastic knife, a faint smile playing across her lips.

""Bella, look,"" Marco said, pointing his spoon toward the flat-screen television mounted in the corner of the room.

The morning news anchor for the Chicago Tribune broadcast looked directly into the camera with an expression of grave solemnity.

""Breaking news from the Dirksen Federal Building,"" the anchor announced.

""In a sweeping ninety-count federal indictment unsealed this morning, the Department of Justice has dismantled a massive municipal corruption ring.""

Images of Captain Douglas Vance in handcuffs, being escorted down the courthouse steps by federal marshals, flashed across the screen.

""Among the charges are racketeering, grand embezzlement of public hospital funds, and the premeditated murder of municipal dockmaster Anthony Rossi four years ago.""

The screen transitioned to a vintage photograph of their father, standing proudly in his blue union jacket on Pier 42 with a clipboard beneath his arm.

""The United States Attorney’s office issued an official posthumous commendation this morning, clearing Anthony Rossi of all fabricated debts and honoring him as an incorruptible public servant.""

Bella set the orange down on the tray, her vision blurring as warm, healing tears spilled over her eyelashes.

""Dad won, didn't he?"" Marco asked softly, reaching out his small hand to touch his sister's cheek.

""Yes, Marco,"" Bella whispered, leaning forward and resting her forehead against his chest.

""Dad won, and we are finally free.""

A quiet knock sounded against the wooden doorframe of the room.

Bella lifted her head to see Aleandro Moretti standing in the threshold.

He wore a dark charcoal wool suit, his left arm supported by an immaculate black silk sling resting across his chest.

He looked impossibly tall, regal, and composed, the pale white scar over his eyebrow catching the morning sun.

""Marco,"" Bella said, wiping her face quickly, ""this is Mr. Moretti; he helped make sure Dr. Campbell had everything he needed for your surgery.""

Marco looked up at the towering man with wide, curious eyes.

""Are you the man from the restaurant?"" the boy asked innocently.

""I am a friend of your sister, Marco,"" Moretti answered, his baritone remarkably gentle as he stepped into the room.

He reached into his breast pocket with his uninjured right hand and produced a small, velvet-lined jeweler’s box.

He walked over to the bedside and placed the box gently into Marco’s small hands.

""What is it?"" Marco asked, carefully opening the brass clasp.

Inside the box lay a vintage silver pocket watch, its brushed steel face engraved with the emblem of the Chicago Longshoremen’s Local 104.

The initials 'A.R.' were carved into the back casing in elegant, faded cursive.

Bella let out a soft gasp, covering her mouth with both hands.

""My father’s watch,"" she breathed, her heart aching with sudden, profound gratitude.

""Bianke took it from your father's car four years ago as a twisted trophy,"" Moretti explained quietly.

""My men recovered it from his safe deposit box at the rail terminal yesterday afternoon.""

He looked down at Marco, his dark eyes filled with genuine respect.

""Your father was the bravest man I ever met in this city, young man.""

""Take care of that watch, and grow up to be just like him.""

""I will, Mr. Moretti,"" Marco promised, clutching the silver watch tightly against his chest.

""I’ll protect it just like Bella protected me.""

Moretti gave a rare, genuine smile, then turned his gaze toward Bella.

""Isabella, may I speak with you in the corridor for a moment?""

""Of course,"" Bella said, kissing Marco’s forehead before following Moretti out into the quiet hallway.

They walked down the sunlit corridor to the small balcony overlooking the hospital’s courtyard garden.

The morning air was cold, crisp, and clean.

""The hospital board finalized the paperwork an hour ago,"" Moretti said, leaning his good shoulder against the brick balustrade.

""All past medical obligations have been expunged from the state database.""

""In addition, the city settlement has established a four-hundred-thousand-dollar educational trust in Marco’s name.""

Bella leaned against the railing beside him, looking out over the city that had tried so desperately to crush her family.

""You did all of this,"" she said softly.

""No, Isabella; your father’s integrity and your courage did this.""

He reached into his pocket and handed her an official envelope bearing the seal of DePaul University.

""The dean of the forensic accounting department reviewed your transcripts and your work on the Pier 42 ledgers.""

""Your full scholarship has been reinstated, effective for the spring semester.""

Bella looked down at the acceptance letter, feeling the weight of the last four years finally lift from her shoulders.

""How am I ever going to repay you for this, Aleandro?""

""You owe me nothing, Isabella,"" Moretti said, his voice dropping into a solemn, quiet register.

""My debt to Anthony Rossi is settled in full.""

He turned his body toward the exit stairs, adjusting the lapel of his tailored coat.

""You belong in the light, Isabella; you have a bright future ahead of you in a world far away from mine.""

""Men like me bring only blood and shadows, and I will not drag your family into the dark again.""

He turned on his heel to walk away, his tall silhouette moving toward the glass doors.

Bella stood frozen on the balcony for two seconds, watching the man who had risked his life for her walk out of her world forever.

""Aleandro!"" she called out, her voice ringing across the open courtyard.

Moretti paused, turning his head back toward her, his scarred eyebrow slightly raised.

Bella walked toward him with steady, deliberate steps, stopping barely a foot from his chest.

""Do not dare tell me where I belong,"" she said, a faint, defiant smile touching her lips.

Moretti stared down at her, caught completely off guard by the familiar fire in her hazel eyes.

""You think you can just pay your debts and walk away from table twelve?"" she asked softly.

""Isabella..."" he murmured, his breath catching in his throat.

""My shift at Luchia’s ends on Friday, Mr. Moretti,"" she said, looking straight into the dark depths of his eyes.

""If you want to say goodbye, you can come order your steak like a gentleman.""

Before he could find an answer, Bella turned around and walked back toward her brother’s room, leaving the most powerful man in Chicago standing speechless in the morning light.
