Chapter 6 - The Debt of the White Eyebrow

The black town car tore through the rain-slicked avenues of Chicago at eighty miles an hour, ignoring every red signal between South Orchard and the medical district.

Inside the back seat, Aleandro Moretti held Marco steady against the pitching motion of the car while Bella pumped the plastic bag of the manual resuscitator.

The boy’s lips were pale, but the mechanical rhythm of the air kept the faint spark of life flickering in his chest.

""Two minutes out!"" Gallo yelled from the driver’s seat, slamming the horn as he blew through a crowded intersection on Adams Street.

When the car slid sideways into the ambulance bay of St. Jude’s, the heavy glass doors parted to reveal four surgical nurses and a crash team waiting with a gurney.

Dr. Campbell, the chief pediatric cardiac surgeon, ran alongside the gurney as they transferred Marco’s small body from Moretti’s arms to the white linen.

""His rhythm is completely disorganized,"" Campbell yelled over the whine of the cardiac monitor.

""We have to bypass the pre-op schedule; he goes straight to bypass right now!""

""Do your work, Campbell,"" Moretti said, his voice quiet yet carrying an undeniable undercurrent of threat.

""There are twelve armed men outside this building protecting your perimeter; focus entirely on the boy.""

The double doors of the surgical wing swung shut, cutting off the rhythmic beeping of the monitor and leaving Bella alone in the brightly lit corridor.

The sterile white walls of the waiting room were completely devoid of warmth.

Bella stood in the center of the linoleum, her hands and clothes covered in dried rain, plaster dust, and a thin smudge of her brother’s blood.

She began to shake, a violent, full-body tremor that caused her teeth to chatter uncontrollably.

Moretti walked over to the corner, took off his heavy black overcoat, and draped it gently around her shivering shoulders.

The heavy wool was still warm from his body, carrying that familiar, intoxicating scent of sandalwood and cold iron.

""Sit down, Isabella,"" he murmured, his large hand guiding her to a low vinyl bench against the wall.

Bella collapsed onto the seat, burying her face in her trembling hands as the silent tears finally broke through her defenses.

""He is all I have left, Moretti,"" she choked out, her voice muffled against her palms.

""My mother died when Marco was born, and my father died on that highway; if Marco doesn't come out of that room, I have nothing.""

Moretti sat down beside her on the narrow bench, his broad shoulders filling the cramped institutional space.

He did not offer empty platitudes or false promises; he simply sat there, solid as an anchor in a raging sea.

""Your father was a brave man, Isabella,"" Moretti said after several minutes of agonizing silence.

Bella lifted her head, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of his heavy coat.

""You spoke about him at the pier,"" she said, her voice raw.

""You said he refused Bianke's bribe; how did you know so much about a dock worker who died four years ago?""

Moretti turned his head to look at her, the harsh fluorescent lighting illuminating every sharp contour of his face.

The thin white scar cutting through his left eyebrow seemed to glow against his olive skin.

""Ten years ago, I was eighteen years old,"" Moretti began, his tone distant and reflective.

""My father was the head of the Moretti family, and I was an arrogant boy who thought he was invincible on the streets.""

Bella watched him, drawn into the dark gravity of his confession.

""Salvatore Bianke staged an internal coup at the central rail yards to eliminate my father's inner circle,"" Moretti continued.

""They ambushed my car near Pier 42; two of my bodyguards were executed in the front seat before I could even draw my weapon.""

He touched the white scar on his brow with the tip of his finger, a faint, bitter memory flashing behind his dark eyes.

""I ran into the main cargo warehouse with a bullet in my thigh and two shooters tracking my blood on the concrete.""

""My father worked that warehouse,"" Bella whispered, her breath hitching in her throat.

""Anthony Rossi was working the graveyard inventory shift alone in the back office,"" Moretti nodded slowly.

""He heard the gunfire, but he did not run out the fire escape to save his own skin.""

Moretti leaned back against the wall, his jaw tightening into iron.

""He dragged me into an empty refrigerated container, buried me beneath sacks of dry salt, and refused to tell Bianke's men where I was hiding.""

Bella stared at him, her heart aching with a mixture of pride and sudden comprehension.

""When they couldn't find me, one of the shooters struck your father across the face with the stock of a shotgun,"" Moretti said, his voice dropping into a whisper.

""That was how I received this scar; the spray of pellets grazed my brow as your father shoved the barrel away from my skull.""

Bella reached out involuntarily, her fingertips stopping barely an inch from the jagged line on his eyebrow.

""He saved your life,"" she whispered.

""He saved my life, and he never asked for a single dollar of reward,"" Moretti confirmed, his eyes locking onto hers with unwavering intensity.

""Four years ago, when Bianke finally murdered your father to cover his paper trail, I was across the ocean fighting a war I could not abandon.""

He reached out and covered her cold hand with his large, warm palm.

""I swore on my father's grave that I would settle every debt Anthony Rossi left behind in this city.""

""So you didn't come to Luchia’s Restaurante by accident on Friday night,"" Bella said, the final realization dawning upon her.

""I came to Orchard Street to break Bianke’s neck for what he did to your family,"" Moretti admitted without hesitation.

""I expected to find a timid waitress struggling to survive in a dying neighborhood.""

His fingers tightened gently around hers, his gaze burning into her soul with a fierce, possessive warmth.

""Instead, I found a lioness who had the courage to look me in the eye and grab the weapon from my hand.""

Before Bella could find the words to answer, the double doors of the surgical wing clicked loudly open.

Dr. Campbell walked into the corridor, pulling his surgical mask down to his neck, his forehead glistening with exhaustion.

Bella sprang to her feet, her heart leaping into her throat as she waited for the verdict that would decide her fate." "CHAPTER 7 — The Pulse in the Recovery Room

Dr. Campbell stepped into the harsh fluorescent glare of the waiting corridor with his surgical cap clutched in his weary hands.

Bella stood frozen in place, her fingers digging deeply into the heavy wool of Moretti’s black coat.

The silence between them felt like an unexploded bomb waiting for the slightest tremor.

""The bypass was successful, Miss Rossi,"" the surgeon said, his voice husky with fatigue.

Bella let out a jagged, sobbing breath that seemed to tear straight through her chest.

""Is he awake?"" she asked, tears cutting hot, clean tracks through the dried soot on her cheeks.

""Not yet, and he won't be for several hours,"" Dr. Campbell replied, resting a reassuring hand on her trembling shoulder.

""We reconstructed the defective mitral valve and restored full systemic pressure without significant tissue damage.""

""Can I see him?""

""You can sit beside his bed for ten minutes, but the next seventy-two hours are absolutely critical.""

Dr. Campbell turned his gaze toward Aleandro Moretti, his professional composure wavering beneath the mob boss's piercing stare.

""He is in Pediatric Intensive Care Room Four, Mr. Moretti.""

""Thank you, Doctor,"" Moretti said softly, giving a slight, courteous nod of his head.

""Your clinic will receive the new pediatric telemetry unit you requested last spring by tomorrow afternoon.""

Dr. Campbell swallowed hard, nodded without asking questions, and retreated back through the double swinging doors.

Bella turned toward Moretti, her eyes wide with overwhelming relief.

""He’s alive,"" she whispered, her voice shaking violently.

""I told you he would be,"" Moretti murmured, his dark eyes softening by an imperceptible fraction.

Before Bella could take a step toward the recovery wing, the heavy glass entrance doors of the hospital lobby rattled open.

Vincenzo Gallo marched down the corridor with urgent, heavy strides, his jaw set in a hard, grim line.

""We have a major problem on the perimeter, Boss,"" Gallo reported in a hushed, gravelly voice.

Moretti’s expression turned instantly to stone.

""Speak, Vinnie.""

""Two marked tactical cruisers from the Seventh Precinct just pulled into the emergency drop-off zone.""

""Who is leading them?"" Moretti demanded, his hand dropping casually near the inside hem of his jacket.

""Captain Douglas Vance himself,"" Gallo answered, glancing nervously toward the quiet recovery rooms.

""He brought four plainclothes detectives and an emergency custody order issued by a municipal night magistrate.""

Bella felt the blood drain completely from her face.

""An emergency custody order?"" she stammered, her heart seizing with terror.

""Vance is using the municipal court to seize Marco as a dependent of an unverified homicide victim,"" Gallo explained coldly.

""He knows we hit the pier warehouse,"" Moretti said, his tone flat and deadly.

""He knows Isabella has the digital ledger, and he wants the boy as leverage before she can hand it over to the Department of Justice.""

""Over my dead body,"" Bella said, her hazel eyes blazing with pure, feral fury.

She spun around to run toward Room Four, but Moretti’s large hand caught her by the forearm, holding her firmly in place.

""Do not panic, Isabella,"" he commanded, his voice steady as iron.

""If you run into that room and fight armed officers with your bare hands, Vance will have you arrested for obstruction.""

""I am not letting that monster touch my brother!""

""No one is touching your brother,"" Moretti said, pulling his encrypted phone from his breast pocket with his free hand.

He dialed a three-digit speed dial and brought the device to his ear without looking away from her eyes.

""Judge Thornton,"" Moretti spoke into the receiver, his baritone slicing through the quiet hallway.

""Captain Vance is currently standing in the lobby of St. Jude's Hospital attempting to execute a fraudulent municipal custody order on Marco Rossi.""

He paused, listening to the hurried response on the other end of the line.

""You have five minutes to issue a federal protective injunction and notify the United States Marshals Service.""

""If Vance steps past the pediatric security desk, I will consider it an armed breach of my family’s private medical trust.""

""Make the call, Arthur.""

Moretti ended the conversation and slid the device smoothly back into his coat pocket.

""Vinnie, take four of our men and block the elevator vestibule on the ground floor.""

""Do we engage if they draw iron?"" Gallo asked, his hand tightening around his sidearm beneath his coat.

""Do not fire unless they reach for the latch of Room Four,"" Moretti ordered calmly.

""Hold them on the ground floor until Thornton’s marshals arrive with the federal seal.""

Gallo nodded once, turned on his boot heel, and vanished down the fire stairs.

Moretti looked down at Bella, who was shivering despite the warm wool coat wrapped around her shoulders.

""Go inside Room Four, Isabella,"" he said gently, brushing a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear.

""Sit beside Marco, hold his hand, and let me handle the wolves at the gate.""

Bella looked into his dark, scarred face, seeing neither cruelty nor deceit in the depths of his eyes.

""You're putting yourself between the police and my family, Moretti.""

""Vance is not the police, Isabella; he is a hired gun wearing a piece of stamped tin on his chest.""

""And what are you?"" she asked, the question slipping out before she could catch it.

""I am the storm that is going to break him,"" he answered quietly.

Bella turned and pushed open the heavy wooden door of Room Four.

The room was dimly lit, filled with the rhythmic, hypnotic beeping of Marco’s heart monitor.

Her little brother lay beneath a crisp white thermal sheet, his face pale but peaceful, a clear oxygen tube resting beneath his nose.

The terrifying blue tint around his lips was completely gone, replaced by a faint, healthy pink hue.

Bella pulled a vinyl chair close to the edge of the mattress and took Marco’s small, cool hand between both of hers.

""I'm here, Marco,"" she whispered, pressing her lips against his knuckles.

""You made it through the storm, buddy.""

May you like

Outside in the corridor, the faint sound of angry raised voices drifted up from the ground-floor atrium.

Bella closed her eyes and listened to the steady, unyielding rhythm of Marco’s beating heart, trusting the man with the scarred eyebrow to hold the line.
