Chapter 9 - The Confrontation at Grand Crossing

The Grand Crossing Rail Depot looked like a rusted graveyard forgotten by the modern world.
Decaying boxcars covered in peeling spray paint sat on overgrown tracks where weeds pushed through cracked gravel.
A thick blanket of cold morning mist hovered three feet above the ground, muffling the distant roar of the Chicago expressway.
Aleandro Moretti killed the engine of the dark utility SUV three hundred yards away, beneath the shadow of a collapsed coal silo.
Vincenzo Gallo sat in the back seat, chambering a round into a tactical carbine with absolute silence.
Bella sat in the passenger seat, staring through the fog at a three-story brick switch tower rising above the rusted rails.
Through the broken second-floor windows of the tower, a faint flicker of yellow lantern light was barely visible.
""Bianke is inside the tower,"" Gallo muttered, peering through a set of military binoculars.
""There are two black unmarked sedans parked behind the old maintenance shed near track four.""
""Those belong to Detective Miller and Vance’s personal hit team,"" Moretti said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
""They will enter through the lower cargo bay to cut off his escape route.""
""What is the play, Boss?"" Gallo asked, leaning forward between the front bucket seats.
""Vinnie, take Marcus and Dante around the eastern trestle; disable the sedans so no one leaves the yard.""
""Understood.""
""Isabella and I will take the elevated maintenance catwalk directly into the switch room,"" Moretti said, turning his dark eyes toward her.
""You stay two paces behind me at all times; if I say drop, you hit the steel plates immediately.""
""Understood,"" Bella answered, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped drum.
They slipped out of the vehicle into the freezing damp air, keeping low behind the rusted walls of the abandoned freight cars.
The smell of damp rust, creosote, and wet gravel filled Bella’s lungs as she followed Moretti’s swift, silent footsteps.
They climbed a rusted exterior iron ladder, their boots making no sound against the damp metal rungs.
Through the frosted glass of the upper catwalk door, the frantic sound of Salvatore Bianke’s voice carried over the wind.
""Where is Vance?"" Bianke shrieked, his voice climbing into a terrified whine.
""He promised he would bring the passport himself!""
Bella peered through the cracked pane into the dilapidated switch room.
Bianke was clutching a cheap leather duffel bag to his chest, backing slowly away from two men dressed in dark trench coats.
Detective Miller stood in the center of the room, holding a heavy revolver fitted with an elongated steel suppressor.
""The Captain had business with the federal attorney this morning, Salvatore,"" Miller said, his tone dripping with mock sympathy.
""He sent us to ensure your departure went as smoothly as possible.""
""You're going to shoot me!"" Bianke screamed, stumbling backward against a row of rusted manual track levers.
""You're going to put me in the ground just like you did to Anthony Rossi four years ago!""
""Rossi was an arrogant dock clerk who didn't know when to close his eyes,"" Miller sneered, leveling the weapon directly at Bianke’s chest.
""And you, Salvatore, are just a loose end that has outlived its usefulness.""
Miller’s finger began to tighten against the trigger.
Before the firing pin could strike, Moretti kicked the heavy catwalk door off its rusted hinges with a thunderous roar.
The iron door flew inward, slamming directly into Miller’s shoulder and throwing the detective violently across the floorboards.
The second corrupt detective spun around, raising his handgun toward Moretti’s face.
Moretti didn't even draw his weapon; he closed the distance in a single explosive stride, catching the man’s gun hand and twisting the joint until bone splintered.
A sickening snap echoed through the small tower, followed by a choked scream of agony as Moretti drove his knee into the detective's solar plexus.
The man collapsed onto the floor, completely neutralized.
Miller scrambled across the broken linoleum, reaching desperately for his dropped revolver.
Bella stepped forward without a fraction of hesitation, kicking the heavy steel weapon across the room where it clattered through a hole in the floorboards.
Miller looked up, clutching his shattered collarbone, his face pale with shock as Moretti stood over him like an avenging demon.
""Tell Vance his retirement party is canceled,"" Moretti whispered, driving the heel of his boot into Miller’s jaw, knocking him instantly unconscious.
The room went dead silent except for the frantic, animal wheezing of Salvatore Bianke.
Bianke sat huddled in the corner beneath a broken control panel, his silver hair wild, his expensive suit coated in grey dust and cobwebs.
He stared up at Bella, his watery eyes widening in complete, disbelieving horror.
""You..."" Bianke gasped, pressing himself hard against the brick wall.
""The girl from Luchia’s...""
""My name is Isabella Rossi,"" Bella said, her voice ringing through the hollow tower with absolute authority.
She stepped across the debris until she stood towering over her father’s killer.
""You had my father run off the road on Interstate 55 because he wouldn't let you steal from sick children.""
Bianke began to weep, tears washing clean streaks through the filth on his hollow cheeks.
""It wasn't my idea, Isabella, I swear to God it wasn't my idea!"" he sobbed, extending his trembling hands in a desperate plea.
""Vance told me your father had copies of the audit; Vance said if we didn't eliminate him, we would both spend thirty years in federal prison!""
""And you put a lien on my brother's medical file to keep me quiet,"" Bella said, her fingernails biting deep into her palms.
""I had to protect myself!"" Bianke wailed.
Moretti stepped up beside Bella, his heavy black firearm clearing his coat with slow, deliberate precision.
He raised the barrel, pointing the dark muzzle directly between Bianke’s weeping eyes.
""One word from you, Isabella,"" Moretti said, his baritone cold and lethal, ""and I will erase this vermin from the face of the earth.""
Bianke squeezed his eyes shut, shaking so violently that his head knocked against the brickwork behind him.
""Please, Alex, please don't kill me!"" he screamed.
Bella looked at the weeping, pathetic old man on the floor, then turned her gaze to Moretti’s cold, unyielding face.
She reached out her bare hand and laid her fingers gently over Moretti’s wrist, just as she had done two nights earlier at table twelve.
Moretti’s eyes shifted from Bianke to her face, his expression unreadable.
""No, Aleandro,"" Bella said softly, using his given name for the very first time.
""If you put a bullet in his head, he gets off easy.""
""He dies in five seconds, and my father becomes just another unsolved case in a city full of blood.""
She tightened her touch on his arm, guiding the heavy weapon slowly downward until it pointed at the floorboards.
""Pick up your duffel bag, Salvatore,"" Bella commanded, her voice cutting through Bianke’s hysterical sobbing.
""You are going to walk into the federal courthouse on your own two feet, and you are going to tell the grand jury every single crime Douglas Vance ever committed.""
May you like
Bianke opened his eyes, staring at Bella with a mixture of terror and overwhelming disbelief.
""And if you leave out a single syllable,"" Moretti added, his voice dropping into a pitch that made the air turn cold, ""I will find you wherever the federal marshals hide you, and I will finish what I started.""
