Chapter 5 - The Midnight Raid on South Orchard

The storm returned with renewed fury by three o’clock Sunday morning, rattling the thin windowpanes of Bella’s fourth-floor apartment.
Bella sat on the floor beside Marco’s bed, watching the rise and fall of her brother's frail chest beneath the wool blanket.
The eighty-thousand-dollar check sat on the bedside table, fully cleared by the downtown bank, guaranteeing Marco’s admission to the surgical suite at noon.
Yet the heavy silence in the apartment felt fragile, like thin ice waiting to crack beneath their feet.
Across the street, parked beneath a flickering streetlight, the black town car remained stationary, keeping a silent, watchful vigil over the building.
Moretti had offered to move them to a secure hotel in the Gold Coast, but Bella had stubbornly refused.
She would not be kept like a prisoner in a gilded cage, and she would not let Marco wake up in a strange room before the biggest surgery of his life.
Suddenly, the town car’s headlights flashed twice through the curtains.
Before Bella could cross to the window, the heavy sound of splintering wood echoed from the stairwell below.
The building's front security door had been violently kicked off its hinges.
Marco stirred in his sleep, coughing weakly as the distant shouting drifted up through the floorboards.
Bella bolted to the bedroom doorway, locking the deadbolt on the inner door before grabbing her phone from the counter.
The line was dead; the building’s telephone box in the alley had already been severed.
Heavy, hurried footsteps pounded up the narrow wooden stairs, moving with aggressive speed toward the fourth floor.
""Marco, wake up,"" Bella whispered, rushing to the bed and pulling a heavy sweater over his head.
""Bella? What’s happening? Is it time for the hospital?"" the boy asked, rubbing his tired eyes in confusion.
""Get into the pantry behind the flour bins, Marco; do not make a sound, no matter what you hear.""
She shoved him gently into the narrow closet, pulling the louvered door shut just as the apartment’s front door gave way under a heavy boot.
The frame shattered inward with an explosive crack.
Two men in civilian clothes carrying snub-nosed revolvers stepped into the small living room, their faces hidden behind dark ski masks.
""Where is the drive, girl?"" the first man barked, his voice muffled by the wool mask.
""There is no drive here!"" Bella shouted, grabbing an iron skillet from the stove and backing toward the pantry.
""Vance wants the backup drive, Rossi, and if we don't find it, we're taking the kid out the window!""
The second man lunged toward her, reaching for her throat with gloved hands.
Bella swung the heavy iron skillet with everything she had, catching the man flush against the side of his jaw.
He stumbled sideways with a howl of pain, crashing into the small kitchen table and sending her teacups shattering across the linoleum.
The first man cursed, raising his weapon to strike her with the heavy barrel.
Before the metal could descend, the wooden doorway behind them vanished into a storm of splinters.
Aleandro Moretti entered the room like an elemental force of nature.
He caught the armed man’s wrist in mid-swing, wrenching the bone with a sickening snap that echoed over the rain outside.
The gun clattered to the floor, and Moretti drove his elbow straight into the attacker's throat, dropping him like a sack of stones.
The second man scrambled off the floor, reaching for his fallen weapon, but Vincenzo Gallo appeared in the doorway, firing a single round into the linoleum between the man's knees.
""Move a finger, and the next one takes your kneecap,"" Gallo said with chilling calm.
Moretti did not look at the fallen intruders; his dark eyes swept across the room until they locked onto Bella standing against the pantry door.
""Did they touch you?"" he demanded, his voice thick with unbridled fury.
""I’m fine,"" Bella breathed, the skillet shaking in her hand as the adrenaline began to ebb.
""Marco is inside the closet.""
At the sound of his name, the pantry door opened slowly, and Marco peered out into the ruined living room.
The young boy took one look at the shattered furniture, the blood on the floor, and the towering silhouette of Moretti, and let out a strangled gasp.
His face turned a terrifying shade of bluish-gray.
He clutched his small chest with both hands, his knees buckling beneath him as his lungs fought desperately for oxygen that would not come.
""Marco!"" Bella screamed, dropping the pan and falling to her knees beside her brother.
His pulse was fluttering wildly against his small throat, erratic and faint, like a dying bird.
""His heart is fibrillating,"" Bella cried, tears of pure terror spilling over her cheeks.
""The stress triggered a massive cardiac event! He needs the crash cart now!""
Moretti did not hesitate for a fraction of a second.
He stepped forward, scooped the limp nine-year-old boy into his arms with impossible gentleness, and cradled him against his chest.
""Vinnie, clear the streets all the way to St. Jude’s,"" Moretti ordered, his voice carrying the authority of an absolute monarch.
""Call the chief of surgery on the private line; tell him if that operating room isn't prepped when my tires hit the ramp, I will burn the hospital to the foundation.""
""Yes, boss,"" Gallo said, pulling his phone and sprinting down the stairs.
Moretti looked down at Bella, who was paralyzed by panic on the floor.
""On your feet, Isabella,"" he commanded softly, extending his free hand toward her.

""Your brother is not dying tonight; I will not allow it.""
Bella grabbed his hand, pulled herself up from the floor, and followed him out into the roaring storm.
