Chapter 12 - The Final Order at Table Twelve

Four weeks later, the first heavy snow of December was falling over Orchard Street, dusting the rusted bus stop and the pawn shop in a pristine blanket of white.

Inside Luchia’s Restaurante, the roaring mahogany fireplace cast a warm, golden glow across the polished cherry tables and crisp white linens.

The dining room was alive with the pleasant, rhythmic murmur of Friday night commerce.

Glasses clinked at the bar, jazz played softly through the vintage brass speakers, and the air smelled richly of roasted garlic, rosemary, and fine red wine.

Isabella Rossi stood near the service station, wearing an elegant dark wool dress instead of her old black apron and brass name tag.

Beside her, Chloe was wiping down a polished silver tray with a wide, radiant smile.

""I still can't believe tonight is your official farewell party, Bella,"" Chloe said, nudging her playfully with an elbow.

""The federal prosecutor’s office doesn't know what kind of shark they’re getting for their spring internship.""

""I’m just glad to be working with balance sheets that don't involve mob kickbacks or hospital liens,"" Bella laughed softly.

Mr. Henderson scurried past them carrying a bottle of vintage champagne, pausing to give Bella an uncharacteristically warm, respectful bow.

""Miss Rossi, your private table near the fire is ready whenever your guests arrive,"" Henderson said, his voice entirely devoid of his old nervous squeak.

""Thank you, Mr. Henderson; you’ve been remarkably generous with Marco’s welcome-home dinner.""

""The Rossi family will never pay for a meal under this roof as long as I draw breath,"" the manager declared proudly before bustling toward the kitchen.

Suddenly, at precisely nine o’clock, the heavy brass entrance doors swung open into the dining room.

The air pressure inside the restaurant shifted instantly, just as it had on that stormy autumn night four weeks earlier.

The chatter at the tables softened, and several diners turned their heads toward the front vestibule.

Aleandro Moretti stepped into Luchia’s Restaurante without an entourage.

There were no armed enforcers flanking his shoulders, and Vincenzo Gallo was nowhere to be seen.

He wore a midnight-blue custom three-piece suit that complemented his broad shoulders and commanding height, his left arm completely healed and free of the silk sling.

His raven hair was brushed neatly back, and the jagged white scar across his left eyebrow looked less like a mark of violence and more like a badge of survival.

He walked across the hardwood floor with calm, effortless elegance, his dark eyes sweeping across the dining room until they locked onto Bella.

The corner of his mouth curved into that faint, dangerous, captivating smile that made her pulse quicken in her throat.

He walked straight to table twelve and pulled out the high-backed mahogany chair.

Bella picked up a fresh linen napkin and a leather-bound wine menu from the service counter.

""Go get him, lioness,"" Chloe whispered with a wink.

Bella smoothed down the fabric of her dark dress and walked across the dining room with slow, confident strides.

She stopped beside table twelve, looking down at the man who had reshaped her entire destiny.

""Good evening, sir,"" Bella said, her hazel eyes dancing with playful amusement.

""Do you have a reservation tonight?""

Moretti leaned back against the plush leather seat, his analytical gaze tracing every line of her radiant face.

""I never make reservations, Isabella; you know that.""

""Then you are fortunate that table twelve happens to be unoccupied,"" she replied, laying the linen napkin across the table before him.

""Can I start you with something to drink while you consider the menu?""

""A bottle of the 2008 Solaia,"" Moretti said, his rich baritone rolling across the linen like warm velvet.

""And two glasses.""

""Two glasses?"" Bella raised an eyebrow, challenging him with a smirk.

""I am not dining alone tonight,"" Moretti replied smoothly.

""The woman who saved my soul happens to be joining me.""

He stood up from his seat, towering over her in all his six-foot-two elegance, and pulled out the opposite chair with effortless courtesy.

Bella looked at the empty seat, then looked up into the dark eyes that no longer carried the cold cruelty of the underworld.

""I heard a rumor on the docks this morning, Mr. Moretti,"" Bella said, stepping around the table but remaining on her feet.

""What kind of rumors do they spread about me now?"" he asked, his voice dropping into that private, intimate octave that belonged to her alone.

""They say the Moretti organization completely dissolved its freight division at Pier 42 last week.""

""They say you transferred the entire port infrastructure into a legitimate municipal logistics cooperative owned by the dockworkers' union.""

Moretti adjusted his French cuffs, the silver links catching the flickering light of the table's candle.

""A very wise, very stubborn forensic accountant once convinced me that true power doesn't come from operating in the shadows.""

""Did she now?""

""She did,"" Moretti murmured, stepping closer until only inches separated them in the warm glow of the dining room.

""She taught me that blood debts can be settled with justice instead of murder.""

He reached out with his right hand, not to seize or threaten, but offering his open palm to her in absolute vulnerability.

""And she left an unfinished order on this table that I intend to spend the rest of my life fulfilling.""

Bella looked down at his open hand, seeing the strength, the scars, and the unyielding protection he offered to her world.

She reached out her bare hand and closed her fingers gently around his wrist, feeling the strong, steady pulse of his heart beneath warm skin.

It was the exact same touch that had stopped his violence four weeks ago, but tonight, there was no fear, no anger, and no broken glass between them.

""I told you once before, Aleandro,"" Bella whispered, her eyes shining with fierce, unconditional devotion.

""Don't dare me.""

""I am daring you, Isabella,"" he murmured, his fingers curling gently around hers, pulling her hand to his lips.

May you like

""Try me.""

Bella smiled, a brilliant, fearless smile that filled the old dining room with warmth, and took her seat beside the king of Orchard Street as the winter snow fell peacefully outside the glass."
