Chapter 8 - The Decryption at Dawn

The storm clouds over Lake Michigan finally parted at six o’clock in the morning, revealing a jagged horizon of cold copper and steel.

Downstairs in the hospital lobby, the confrontation had ended without bloodshed twenty minutes earlier.

Four armed United States Marshals had arrived with a federal restraining order signed by Chief Judge Thornton, forcing Captain Vance and his detectives to retreat into the wet morning fog.

Bella sat at a polished mahogany conference table inside St. Jude's private executive library, three doors down from Marco’s recovery room.

A steaming mug of black coffee sat untouched beside the borrowed laptop computer.

Beside her stood Aleandro Moretti, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing thick forearms marked by old, faded scars of street violence.

The encrypted metal thumb drive from Pier 42 was plugged firmly into the laptop's side port.

""Bianke used an old Swiss commercial accounting cipher to mask the offshore shell companies,"" Bella said, her fingers dancing rhythmically across the keyboard.

""He layered the payments beneath municipal sanitation contracts from 2018.""

Moretti leaned over her shoulder, the faint scent of his sandalwood soap mixing with the bitter aroma of the dark roast coffee.

""Can you break the third encryption layer without triggering the self-delete sequence?"" he asked.

""I spent three years mastering forensic ledger architecture before my father was taken from us, Moretti.""

""Show me what he was hiding, Isabella.""

Bella entered a string of command prompts, bypassing the security protocols by using her father’s old union identification number as the decryption key.

With a soft chime, the dark screen flashed green, unfolding a massive, sprawling tree of financial transactions.

Hundreds of rows of confidential transfers populated the monitor in sharp, unforgiving clarity.

""Look at this partition,"" Bella whispered, pointing her finger at a series of highlighted ledger items labeled 'Terminal Operations.'

Moretti leaned closer, his eyes narrowing into slits as he read the names.

""Vance didn't just take monthly kickbacks from Bianke,"" Bella murmured, tracing the numbers with a cold chill running down her spine.

""Vance was a full fifty-percent partner in the illegal narcotics freight moving through the Grand Crossing Rail Depot.""

""Grand Crossing is an abandoned train yard on seventy-fifth street,"" Moretti said, his baritone dropping into a dangerous chill.

""The city shut down the freight switches three years ago for structural repairs.""

""That’s why they used it,"" Bella explained, scrolling deeper into the encrypted correspondence logs.

""Vance used his tactical squad to clear out the local precinct patrols while Bianke brought in the sealed cargo containers from Canada.""

Suddenly, Bella stopped scrolling, her breath catching violently in the middle of her throat.

""What is it?"" Moretti asked, his hand coming to rest firmly against the back of her wooden chair.

""There is a scheduled message draft dated for ten o’clock this morning,"" Bella said, her voice dropping to a horrified whisper.

""It is an operational memo sent from Vance’s encrypted terminal to a private security detail.""

Moretti leaned over and clicked the file open.

The text on the screen was brief, concise, and chillingly corporate in its execution.

'Subject: Salvatore Bianke. Location: Grand Crossing Switch Tower Three. Time: 10:00 AM. Directive: Terminate on site upon delivery of secondary travel documents. Stage scene as narcotic transaction dispute.'

Bella stared at the glowing monitor, the cold horror of the realization washing over her.

""Vance told Bianke he was bringing him fake Canadian passports and emergency cash to help him skip the country,"" she whispered.

""He is luring Salvatore into an abandoned switchyard to execute him,"" Moretti said, his jaw tightening like an iron vise.

""If Bianke dies this morning, Vance can pin the entire Pier 42 operation, the hospital embezzlement, and my father’s murder solely on Bianke’s dead body,"" Bella said.

""The dead do not testify in front of federal grand juries,"" Moretti agreed, straightening his tall frame.

He reached for his heavy wool overcoat draped across the nearby armchair.

""Vinnie and I will take six men to Grand Crossing and handle Vance’s clean-up crew,"" Moretti said, checking the magazine of his sidearm.

""I am going with you,"" Bella said immediately, slamming the laptop shut and standing up from the conference table.

Moretti stopped in mid-motion, his scarred eyebrow rising in sharp disapproval.

""You are staying here with your brother, Isabella; Grand Crossing is going to be an abattoir.""

""Bianke is the only living human being who witnessed Captain Vance sign the hit order on my father's car,"" Bella countered, refusing to back down an inch.

""If you go in there with guns blazing, Vance's men will shoot Bianke before you can even kick down the door.""

""I know how to handle an ambush, Miss Rossi.""

""You know how to kill people, Moretti; you don't know how to keep a terrified coward alive long enough to sign a federal deposition.""

She grabbed her canvas jacket from the coat rack, stepping directly into his personal space, her hazel eyes burning with fierce determination.

""I took your wrist at Luchia's because I refused to let you ruin my life.""

""Now I am telling you to take me to that rail yard so I can look my father's killer in the eye and make him pay legally.""

Moretti looked down at her small, defiant face for several long seconds, the harsh morning light outlining every stubborn contour of her jaw.

A slow, dangerous smile curved the corner of his lips.

""You are the most reckless woman I have ever encountered in my life,"" he murmured softly.

""And you are running out of time to catch that train, Mr. Moretti.""

May you like

Moretti zipped his coat, turned toward the doorway, and signaled for her to follow.

""Keep your head down, Isabella, because if a single bullet grazes you today, I will tear this city apart brick by brick.""
