Chapter 10 - Return To The City: The Plan For The Penthouse

The midnight skyline of Manhattan glittered through a dense blanket of smog and neon lights as a sleek, anonymous cargo van merged seamlessly onto the West Side Highway.
Inside the vehicle, parked in a dimly lit industrial loading bay near the financial district, Julian and Elena prepared for the most dangerous mission of their lives.
Elena wore a dark, form-fitting tactical jumpsuit, her hair tied back tightly, while Julian adjusted the cuffs of a custom-tailored charcoal suit that masked his body armor perfectly.
“The security grid at Sterling Tower is biometric-locked on the top three executive floors,” Julian reviewed the architectural schematics spread out across the dashboard.
“Which is why we aren't going through the front doors,” Elena replied smoothly, tapping a finger on the rooftop helicopter pad access shafts indicated on the blueprint.
“A roof infiltration? In the middle of downtown Manhattan?” Julian raised an eyebrow skeptically. “That’s suicide without a full tactical extraction team.”
“It’s the only way past the lobby metal detectors and the private security detail,” Elena insisted, handing him an encrypted override device. “Arthur is hosting a private gala tonight to celebrate the finalization of the corporate merger. He’ll be surrounded by hundreds of high-society elites.”
“Hiding in plain sight,” Julian realized, a slow, confident smirk returning to his rugged features. “He won’t expect the ghost he tried to murder on a mountain pass to walk right through his front doors in a tuxedo.”
“Precisely. While you distract him at the gala, I’ll slice through the mainframe firewall in his private office and download the unredacted ledgers directly to this flash drive,” Elena explained, holding up a small titanium drive.
Julian reached out, placing his hand gently over hers on the dashboard, stopping her frantic preparations for a brief, meaningful moment.
“Elena… if this goes sideways, if Arthur’s men trap us up there… what do you do?” Julian asked softly, his blue eyes searching her face with deep vulnerability.
“I don't plan on failing, Julian,” she whispered, her voice softening as she looked back into his intense gaze. “And neither do you.”
She pulled her hand away gently, sliding the titanium drive into her utility pouch and checking the safety catch on her concealed sidearm.

“Let’s go crash a party,” Elena whispered with a fierce, dangerous smile.
Julian nodded firmly, grabbing his suit jacket and stepping out of the van into the cold city air, ready to reclaim his empire, avenge their pasts, and settle the score once and for all.
