Chapter 9 - Interrogation In The Woods: Uncovering The Mastermind

The wrecked utility truck hissed quietly as radiator fluid leaked onto the damp forest floor, mixing with the melting snow and autumn leaves.
Miller sat handcuffed to the steering wheel of the smashed vehicle, his nose bleeding and his tactical vest torn, glaring daggers at Julian and Elena.
Julian stood over him with absolute calm, holstering his sidearm while Elena kept her rifle trained on the trembling surviving operative pinned against a nearby tree.
“You think arresting me changes anything, Julian?” Miller spat out bitterly, a cruel smirk crossing his battered face. “The board already voted to strip your executive powers. By tonight, Vance Global Logistics belongs to Arthur Sterling.”
Elena froze instantly at the mention of that name, her rifle barrel dropping an inch as her dark eyes widened in sudden, profound shock.
“Arthur Sterling?” Elena repeated the name aloud, her voice trembling slightly with a mixture of disbelief and long-suppressed rage.
Julian noticed the sudden shift in her demeanor, turning his attention away from Miller to look down at her with intense concern.
“You know him, Elena?” Julian asked quietly, stepping closer to her side.
“He’s not just a board member, Julian,” Elena answered, her voice dropping into a harsh, venomous whisper. “Arthur Sterling is the man who framed my husband for embezzlement five years ago, drove him to suicide, and then tried to silence me when I started asking questions.”
Miller let out a harsh, dry laugh, confirming the terrifying web of corruption connecting their two entirely separate tragedies.
“Small world, isn't it?” Miller mocked. “Arthur funded this entire clean-up operation to eliminate Julian and sweep the financial audits under the rug permanently.”
Julian’s jaw clenched so hard his teeth ached, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place with crystal-clear, horrifying precision.
“He didn't just want my company; he wanted to monopolize the entire international shipping cartel through a hostile corporate coup backed by syndicate money,” Julian realized aloud.
“And now you’ve walked right into his trap,” Miller sneered. “You think you can fight a billionaire who owns half the federal judges and all of Wall Street?”
“We don't need federal judges, Miller. We need the physical backup drives containing the unredacted financial ledgers locked in Arthur’s private penthouse safe,” Julian stated coldly.

Elena looked up at Julian, the fierce, unyielding determination in her eyes matching his own with terrifying, beautiful intensity.
“Then we’re going to Manhattan,” Elena declared, her voice ringing with finality. “We’re going to storm the lion’s den and take everything back.”
