Chapter 2 - The Blood On The Floorboards And The Stranger’s Secret

The heavy oak door rattled softly as the storm outside beat against it, but inside the cabin, the only sound was the ragged, shallow breathing of the wounded man.

Elena dragged his heavy, unconscious frame across the rough pine floorboards of the living room, leaving a dark, viscous trail of blood in his wake.

Her arms burned with exhaustion, and her breath came in short, panicked gasps as she maneuvered him onto the worn leather sofa near the unlit stone fireplace.

Standing over him, her chest heaving, she stared down at the extent of his injuries under the harsh, flickering yellow light of a single kerosene lamp.

His white dress shirt was completely soaked in crimson, torn open at the collar to reveal a pale chest rising and falling in erratic, dangerous intervals.

“Damn you,” Elena muttered under her breath, a mixture of intense anger and reluctant humanity pulling her into action.

She rushed to the small bathroom, grabbing a rusted medical kit, clean towels, and a basin of warm water before hurrying back to the living room.

Kneeling beside the sofa, she set to work with practiced efficiency, cutting away the ruined fabric of his shirt to expose the source of the bleeding.

To her shock, the gash on his forehead was deep, but it was nothing compared to the ugly, cauterized bullet graze running diagonally across his ribs.

He had been shot, hunted down, and left for dead out on the treacherous mountain pass just miles from her secluded cabin.

As she pressed a sterile gauze pad firmly against the wound on his ribs, the stranger’s eyes suddenly snapped open with a violent, involuntary jerk.

His brilliant blue eyes, clouded with pain and adrenaline, locked onto her face with fierce, predatory suspicion.

He reached out with lightning-fast reflexes, his strong fingers wrapping around her wrist in a crushing, iron grip that pinned her in place.

“Who… who sent you?” he rasped out, his voice a harsh, gravelly demand dripping with paranoia and past betrayal.

“Relax, you idiot, or you’ll bleed out on my floor,” Elena snapped back fiercely, refusing to cower beneath his threatening gaze. “I’m the one trying to keep you breathing.”

He stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, searching her expressive eyes for any sign of deception or malice before his grip slowly began to loosen.

“My name… is Julian,” he whispered, his eyelids fluttering downward as exhaustion and blood loss dragged him back into unconsciousness.

“Julian,” Elena repeated the name softly to herself, staring down at the mysterious stranger whose arrival had just turned her hidden exile upside down.

She finished bandaging his wounds with efficient care, her hands shaking slightly as she realized the grave danger she had just invited under her roof.

If Julian was running from whoever had put a bullet in his ribs, it wouldn't take long for his hunters to trace his vehicle out here in the dark woods.

She walked over to the window, peering cautiously through the cracked blinds out at the abandoned luxury car idling in her driveway, its headlights cutting beams through the storm.

The clock was ticking, and the secrets Julian carried inside his bleeding body were about to drag them both into a deadly war.
