Chapter 7 - Fire In The Pines: The Ambush Explodes

The forest canopy held a heavy, suffocating silence before the sudden, violent roar of gunfire shattered the mountain peace.

Three black-clad operatives burst out from the dense pine thicket, moving in a tight tactical wedge toward the front porch of the cabin with weapons raised.

Leading the advance was Commander Vance’s senior enforcer, a scarred veteran named Miller who had hunted down high-value targets across three different continents.

“Hold positions! Check the perimeter for traps!” Miller barked in a harsh whisper over his comms headset, gesturing for his men to spread out.

The lead operative took two steps onto the wooden porch, his boot heel catching the hidden tripwire concealed beneath the welcome mat.

A blinding, magnesium-white flash erupted with a deafening pop, accompanied by a high-pitched acoustic disorient that sent the operative screaming backward off the porch.

“Flashbangs! They’re booby-trapped!” another operative shouted, raising his assault rifle to blind-fire through the wooden walls of the cabin.

Before he could pull the trigger, Elena’s suppressed rifle hissed from the hidden sniper nest she had improvised in the attic loft, dropping him instantly into the snow.

“Flank the left side! Smoke ’em out!” Miller roared in blind fury, pulling a heavy canister of tactical smoke from his belt and hurling it through the broken front window.

Thick, acrid gray smoke billowed rapidly through the interior of the cabin, filling the living room and blinding anyone inside within seconds.

“They’re using smoke! Now!” Julian shouted from his position near the kitchen, activating the emergency ventilation fans connected to the underground drainage culvert.

Instead of suffocating in the smoke, Elena and Julian slipped silently down through the hidden root cellar hatch into the damp, dark subterranean escape tunnel.

Outside, Miller and his remaining operative charged the front door, kicking the splintered wood completely off its hinges and storming into the smoke-filled living room.

“Clear! Room one is clear!” the operative yelled, sweeping his rifle across the empty furniture and the bloodstained floorboards from the previous shootout.

Miller stared at the empty room, his face twisting into a mask of pure rage as he realized they had fallen right into an abandoned trap.

“It’s a decoy! They’re gone!” Miller cursed, smashing his fist against the wooden mantelpiece. “Find them! They couldn't have made it far in this terrain!”

As the operatives scrambled frantically back out onto the porch to secure the perimeter, a sudden, heavy rustling noise echoed from the steep wooded ridge directly above them.

Miller looked up just in time to see two figures silhouetted against the gray sky on the cliff ledge, their weapons leveled down at the clearing.

“Fire!” Miller screamed, but it was already too late.
