Chapter 13 - Rooftop Pursuit: The Final Showdown

The cold midnight wind whipped wildly across the eighty-second-floor helipad of Sterling Tower, carrying the distant hum of city traffic far below.
Elena burst through the heavy glass rooftop doors, her boots sliding slightly on the wet metal grating of the landing pad as she scanned the perimeter for an escape route.
Suddenly, two armed corporate security operatives stepped out from behind the service housing unit, blocking the access ladder with assault rifles raised.
“Drop the weapon! Hands behind your head!” the lead operative demanded aggressively, stepping forward into the moonlight.
Elena didn't drop her weapon; instead, she rolled smoothly to the left, using the fuel-tank barricade for cover as a volley of suppressed rounds chewed up the metal grating beside her.
She returned fire with rapid, calculated precision, catching the lead operative in the shoulder and sending him spinning backward into the safety netting.
Before the second operative could adjust his aim, a heavy shadow tackled him from behind, slamming him hard against the concrete helipad surface with bone-crunching force.
It was Julian, who had slipped away from the ballroom chaos, fought his way up the emergency stairwell, and reached the roof just in time to cover her escape.
“You always have to make a dramatic entrance, don't you?” Elena panted, a breathless, adrenaline-fueled smile crossing her face as she extended a hand to help him up.
“Traffic downstairs was terrible,” Julian joked back, though his blue eyes remained sharp and scanned the rooftop access doors for more incoming threats.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors burst open once more, and Arthur Sterling stepped out onto the helipad, holding a heavy-caliber revolver with a shaking, sweaty hand.
His expensive tuxedo jacket was torn, his silver hair was wild, and his face was twisted into an ugly, psychotic mask of utter desperation.
“You think you ruined me? You think a flash drive is going to stop a federal indictment I’ve already bought and paid for?” Arthur screamed hysterically, raising his pistol toward Julian’s chest.

“The flash drive is already uploaded to every federal news agency and district attorney in the tri-state area, Arthur,” Julian stated calmly, taking a slow step forward to shield Elena with his body.
“Then we all burn together!” Arthur shrieked, his finger tightening convulsively on the trigger.
